Bit of a drawn out post but I wanted to describe not only my new nas but how I use it and keep it safe.
I had 2x really old 4 bay NAS units and a large gigabit network that desperately required an upgrade. The NAS units were so old they couldn’t sustain higher than 50MB/s transfer speed. I wanted to upgrade to a larger single NAS unit that could stream & transcode 4K video with capability to transfer files a lot faster.
After some lengthy research I chose the TS-664-8G as the base for my Plex Server.
Here is the parts I chose to go with it…
- 2x16GB Kingston 32GB KF432S20IBK2/32
- 2x Kingston KC3000 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (set as Raid 1 for system)
- 6x Western Digital WD Red Pro NAS 22TB (set as Raid 5 for storage)
- Ubiquiti USW-Pro-Max-48 48 Port switch with 16x 2.5GbE
- Asus GT-AX6000 router
The GT-AX6000 is capable of 2.5GbE to both the WAN & LAN, so it’s connected to the 2.5GbE of the switch but alas I only have gigabit internet available. I have the TS-664 and my computers all connected to the 2.5GbE network, with TV’s etc all on the gigabit network.
The apps I purchased & installed are Plex and also DA Drive Analyzer (for peace of mind).
To keep the unit cool I keep the front cover off and have it sitting behind extra cooling fans in my data rack. I just have to keep an eye on the dust getting in there, it does need an occasional clean.
The nas is directly protected by an Eaton UPS, but the house is also backed up by a Tesla powerwall and there is a surge arrester on the main power switchboard. I also keep the house protected from the TV antenna with multiple surge protectors on the main cable to help protect from storm esd filtering into a TV then into my network.
My new TS-664-32G build and network are working perfectly.
My TS-664-32G has 100TB of usable storage and transfers at the max link speed the 2.5GbE network can go.
It’s sole use it for Plex and so far has been streaming up to 4K content around my home to a mix of 4K and 1080P TV’s & devices without any issue at all. I was really impressed by the transcoding capability of 4K video to the 1080P devices. I was expecting maybe a few issues when streaming to more than one device but it’s yet to show signs of struggling.
I’m very happy with the entire system, the upgrade turned out great.
