[Chat] Using NAS as a surveillance service - The origins of QVR-related services

Because of the typhoon, I suddenly felt the urge to type and share…

Why did QNAP decide to develop the QVR surveillance service? It’s actually because we noticed that the demand for integrated surveillance solutions in the market is increasing, and QNAP’s NAS happens to provide a suitable platform.

QNAP’s original area of expertise is network storage—in simple terms, it allows you to store files from your computer or mobile phone into the NAS through a web interface or app. Over the years, QNAP has accumulated a lot of experience in data protection and hardware stability. For example, I use QNAP NAS myself, and even if my phone or computer suddenly fails, I’m not too worried about losing my data. With cloud backup, even if something happens to the NAS, important data can still be recovered. So, integrating surveillance functions—which generate large amounts of video and require periodic archiving—into NAS is a natural outcome.

As for why we wanted to create the QVR service, there are several reasons:

  1. Make NAS functionality more comprehensive: QNAP NAS was initially designed for data storage and backup, but we hope NAS can be more than just a place to store data. By adding surveillance features, users can accomplish more tasks, making the functionality more complete.

  2. Provide cost-effective and flexible surveillance solutions: Traditional CCTV systems are quite complicated. Some home cameras require you to buy extra cloud space or memory cards to record. With QNAP’s NAS, you can store all surveillance footage centrally on the NAS, making management easier and costs more transparent. There’s no need to pay monthly cloud fees; you can handle everything directly with the NAS.

  3. Smart analytics: Nowadays, AI and intelligent analysis technologies are increasingly common in the security field. QNAP has integrated smart surveillance features like facial recognition and human detection into QVR, and the analysis is handled by the main device, so you can use your existing cameras for smart detection. This greatly reduces false alarms caused by environmental factors, allowing users to focus on events that truly require attention.

  4. Unified management and convenient user experience: You can manage all video sources and playback from a single interface. Even if you use different brands, you only need one QVR interface. For users already familiar with the QNAP system, there’s no learning curve, and it’s available on various platforms like PC, Mac, and mobile phones—very convenient.

  5. Data security and backup features: QNAP’s NAS is very reliable in terms of data protection and backup, which is especially important for surveillance footage. Installing QVR on QNAP NAS ensures the safety and backup of video data. Compared to traditional NVR systems, the data is more secure and stable.

After evaluating the above, we began developing the QVR service. Maybe I’ll share more about the challenges we encountered when I have time.
