Added a new hard drive but it won’t mirror on a raid 1 set up.

it shows as single Disk.

Old drive WD, new drive Seagate: one of the WD has been replaced with seagate.

Not sure if you can mirror two drives of different sizes.

Yes, different sizes are OK, with the usual restrictions.

However, as the larger drive has been configured as a Single Disk, you’ll probably have to format it and ensure it’s added as a second drive for your RAID1.

BTW: have you confirmed you still have a RAID1 userdata array?

Please SSH into your NAS as the ‘admin’ user and run the following command:

cat /proc/mdstat

Thanks for the quick response. I thought this should be a known issue. I do have a work around. The reboot creates a problem. it degrades md0. added internal bitmap to md0 to reduce resync time. created a small script to check if md0 is degraded and remount the drive, which is scheduled through cron. the QTS interface still doesn’t show that everything is fine but the logs does show what is going on after the reboot.

Bit confusing.

But if you tried to replace a disk in a RAID 1, you should do it while the NAS is turned on.

Now, if the new disk is labelled as Single Disk, then it was configured as such before, or there is another problem. You would need to format it in any case, before re-adding it to the RAID 1.
