New TS-464-8GB-US Where do #2 ram & Samsung 990 Pro 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 go?

I’ve got a 10yr+ TS-251 and a more recent TS-230, and am now getting a TS-464. The 464 makes me very cautious:

  • 4 Seagate 12TB Ironwolf Pro - got 'em
  • 990 Samsung 2TB M.2 NVM - getting it
  • 1 8GB RAM installed (slot 1) and seems to have a slot 2 available. But …

I can’t identify the #1 8GB, and it appears to be wired in place. Can I go with Crucial for #2 8GB or ?

The 990 Samsung seems to have a separate slot, but this is my first try with this M.2 NVM. Guidance?

Hello,

a TS-464

And my TS-264

And there is a user guide

My TS-264 work fine with this

The user guide says the TS-464-8GB doesn’t have upgradeable memory. Also, note that this model only supports PCIe 3.0. While your Samsung 990-series NVMe will still work, it will only operate at PCIe 3.0 speeds in this model.

Thank you Becker2020 & KarmannGhia! (I had a Latin teacher - a Scot - who drove a Karmann Ghia c. 1966 - an interesting mix of skills.) sigh The 8GB limit is a drag. Onward to greater glory … a RAID 5 implementation. Again, thanks!

TS-464 hardware specification says 2 memory slots since 2024/01

Early TS-x64 had soldered RAM.
Later serial numbers got SO-DiMM slots. You need to open your NAS and check for yourself.

When you setup your NAS and do the first install wizard DO NOT install your 3.5" drives.

Finish the wizard with both M.2 (in raid1) only. Letting QuTS put the system partition on the HDDs will slow down everything.

Install 3.5" HDDs after you get to QuTS dashboard for the first time.

I get your meaning! When and if I get this beast to wake up with sufficient RAM!

The wording is a bit confusing, you mean the system pool (or system volume on QTS), …partition would imply the OS (and there is no way around having md9 and md13 replicated on all disks, besides failing them out manually afterwards)

Correct. As soon as you add additional disks, the OS spreads to it.
