No internet access on new TS-253E NAS

I have a new TS-253 NAS that appears not to have internet access. No problem accessing the NAS over my LAN, but it doesn’t find firmware updates (firmware is definitely out of date) and can’t open the app store. What could be causing this?

Thanks.

Can you please open Network and Virtual switch and tell us what your network settings are for your NAS? Do you have your router set up as your gateway?

Network & Virtual Switch won’t open. The NAS connects to the network via a Dell switch connected directly to the router. I have another QNAP NAS connected to the network in the same way that works fine. Very strange. This is my fourth QNAP NAS and have never had an issue like this before.

Suggest re-applying the latest firmware available for that model NAS. It’s currently 5.2.7.3297

NAS won’t connect to the internet to download that firmware update. That’s the basic problem.

Download the firmware manually on your PC from QNAP’s website, then apply it through the NAS web UI.

Are you using Qfinder? If so, is your device visible in the Qfinder list? A screenshot would be super helpful for us to see exactly what you’re seeing. Thanks!

QFinder sees it, and I can log onto it fine. The router sees the NAS; it’s on the network. But the NAS doesn’t see the internet. My fourth QNAP NAS and never had a problem like this before. Gave up and returned it finally.

In our experience, similar situations are often caused by a DNS configuration issue. Just a friendly suggestion for anyone else who might run into this!

Could not configure DNS, either automatically or manually.

Well, the problem was not the NAS. You gave up too easily.

If not the NAS, then what? That’s the question. Spent a lot of time poking at the problem, with no resolution. Have another QNAP NAS running right now that has never had any problem connecting to the internet. Same for others I’ve owned in the past, and I’ve never had to do anything special to get them to connect. Strange experience.

Well, we’ve made suggestions but you haven’t been willing to try them. When @OneCD suggested to download and reapply the firmware you said, “I can’t.” Yet it was suggested that you download the firmware from the website onto your computer and update it that way. Did you do that?

Did you attempt to SSH into the shell of the NAS and see if you could ping an IP address on the internet? That would tell you a lot if it was just a DNS issue or if there was a gateway issue.

The fact you couldn’t open network and virtual switch tells me you had a bad firmware load. So did you do what was suggested?

By the time I got the suggestion to download the firmware from the website, the NAS was gone. Would have tried that. Don’t know what SSHing into the shell is. I could open Network and Virtual Switch but it wasn’t helpful. Yeah, might have been a bad firmware load, but strange that the NAS would come out of the box that way. I do appreciate the help people offered, but none of it that arrived while I still had the NAS worked.

Like I said - you gave up too quickly not even waiting for the community to respond. But your call.
