Hi all, I have a ts-451a with 4xWD60EFZX, and disk 1 started to report errors, so I replaced it with a WD60EFRX, it is now listed as Ready, but my raid5 did not rebuild automatically… I was told by Copilot AI that i had to initialize the new disk (WD60EFRX) on my computer using Diskpart, so that it gets listed as ‘new’, then the rebuild will start automatically… Is this correct?
Well, did you do a “hot swap” or did you shut down the NAS and install the disk? You are supposed to do it hot.
And from QNAP’s new “Genius AI”:
Follow these steps to replace it safely and rebuild the RAID:
Check status first: sign in to QTS/QuTS hero and go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks to confirm which disk is reported as failed and note the bay number.
Verify compatibility: confirm the replacement drive is supported via the device’s Compatibility List before proceeding.
Prepare for replacement: > Warning: do NOT power-cycle the NAS during a rebuild. If your unit supports hot-swap, you can remove the failed drive while the NAS is running. If unsure, power down the NAS before swap.
Replace the disk: remove the failed drive from the indicated bay and insert the new compatible drive into the same bay. The system should detect the new disk and automatically start rebuilding the RAID.
Monitor rebuild: watch Storage & Snapshots > Storage/Snapshot (or Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Storage/Snapshots) for rebuild progress and check system logs at Control Panel > System > System Logs to confirm no error
Is that drive model on the compatibility list? Nearly any SATA drive should work and be recognized. The rebuild should be automatic. Maybe someone else can chime in…
If you replaced it hot, then I’d suggest the easiest and best approach is to create a QNAP support ticket as they can likely see and correct the issue quickly, efficiently and safely.
Messing around with random commands and following the advice of AI can lead to all sorts of issues.
Hopefully you have a backup just in case something else goes wrong.
That could be the problem; normally, you just put a brand new HDD into the NAS without any extra steps.
Maybe do a diskpart clean again and try it once more.
Of course, make sure to update your backup beforehand.
If you’re unlucky, the new HDD might be slightly smaller than the previous ones, in which case the rebuild won’t work either. QNAP should be able to tell you that with a support ticket.
Regarding this issue, we recommend opening a support ticket so our Support Team can assist you. Alternatively, you can download the debug log from Helpdesk and provide it to us so we can try to identify the cause. Thanks!
