Power option - 872XT with 8 SSD's

Hi

I have read quite a few posts about the best power configurations for a NAS with normal hard disks, but I can’t find the answer for a NAS with all SSD’s

My NAS has 8 Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SSD drives.
It’s currently only used for Plex streaming to TV’s around the house

Yes, I know, the SSD’s are a bit overkill, but the NAS is positioned on the floor, right next to our sofa, and the sound of disks constantly chugging and spinning up and down, would have driven everyone mad.

My question is : What is better for my machine and my electricity bill. Should I leave it running 24 hours a day or shut it down for 7 hours a day, between 11pm and 6am. I’m assuming that the NAS uses more power when booting and shutting down?

Many thanks

What is the datecode of your NAS? If the serial number is lower than Q21 then you will have a bad time with that NAS. Switching the NAS off and in could accelerate that demise. If the date is Q21 or higher, you could put it on a power schedule.

Hi

Thanks for replying.

The serial number is Q23xxxx

My dude, then you could try using a power schedule.

From a power-saving perspective, shutting down for 7 hours a day would definitely save more energy. You can refer to other posts that mention the power schedule feature.

Thanks!
