Process to upgrade Single Static Volume 2x2TB HDD (Raid 0) on TS-253 Pro

Hi folks,

I hope this is the right board for this question…

I’ve had a TS-253 Pro with 2 x 2TB WD Red drives configured in a single static volume (I believe) as Raid 0 used mainly for Plex Media Server. I have a couple of external drives attached also. All now at capacity! And I’m looking to finally get the two main drives updated. What I’d like is to use a 2.5" SSD (2TB) in drive 1 (which I’d hope to move all the apps onto) and a 3.5" 16TB HDD for storage.

Now, my plan was to get a QNAP TR-004 so I could add some drives to cover the initial copy of data so I could replace the two main drives in the TS-253 Pro. The only thing is a) I’ve no idea if this is possible and b) if it is, what would be the process to achieve the desired end result i.e. a 2TB SSD running the apps (e.g. Plex Media Server, SabNZBD etc) with all the other drives serving as “storage” for media files (the one remaining drive bay in the TS-253 Pro and the 4 drive bays in the QNAP TR-004)…

Can someone help point me in the right direction or let me know I’m screwed and need to start from scratch… :?

Thanks in advance!

edit My OS is QTS 5.2.3.3006

Only way to increase/change a RAID0,is to start from scratch. With RAID0 the data will be gone upon single failure, so full backups should exist at any given time.

If you want a TR004, use a RAID1 SSD inside of the NAS and then setup the TR for your data disks as internal pool.

Make sure you also backup the data on the TR

Hi @dolbyman thanks for the response. I suspected this might be the case… I guess I have some work to do over the coming weeks then. I’m relatively unfamiliar with RAID setups so bear with me. Does this mean in the NAS I use 2 x matching SSDs for the RAID 1 (on one volume), install OS and apps on this volume, and then set up the TR004 on its own volume as RAID 1 also (so use two/four matching SATA HDD) for the data storage?

If so, in the TR004, if I start with 2 HDD can I add a further 2 HDD later on in the same volume/pool as and when I need more storage?

If you use 4 disks in the TR use RAID5, the TR only supports RAID1 on 2 drives (a 4 drive RAID1 would be a waste of space)

Have a peek here

The TR units do not support RAID migration or expansion
