Qnap 451+, can I use a regular UPS?

I have a Qnap 451+ and I’m thinking about buying a UPS. I’d like to know if I can buy a conventional UPS or if it necessarily needs to be a sine wave UPS?

I use the Qnap at home.

The compatibility list of your NAS should have some UPS models on it.

I have some sine and approximation (square) sine UPS connected to QNAP units, and they are running just fine when the power fails.

Thanks

Any UPS, surge protector or backup power unit can typically be used to regulate/provide power i.e. basic power regulation. However, if you are asking about using it to communicate with the NAS to shutdown on power loss, then you should look at one on the compatibility list.

NUT will work with almost any real brand UPS (APC, Cyber, Eaton).

Sine is always better.
But for example, my 264 has a 90w power adaptor that’s like 3lbs. With electrolytic capacitors that big it’s going to care a lot less when I feed it modified sine.

Get the best quality UPS you can afford, this is your data we are talking about.

The Cyberpower UPS is definitely compatible.

If your budget allows, a Sine Wave UPS is indeed better for a NAS, as it provides cleaner power and further reduces the risk of data loss.

However, regardless of how well you protect your power supply, implementing a solid backup strategy remains the most important priority!

I only use the Qnap to store DVDs, concerts, music videos, and MP3s. So this NAS doesn’t contain any very important data. My need for a UPS is because I have my Home Assistant automation system installed on it via Virtual Station, so often when there’s a power outage, Home Assistant stops working and consequently my home automation also stops, and I have to log in and reactivate Home Assistant.

Thank you again for your attention.

Obviously only you can decide how important it is to YOU.

But it doesn’t sound like there is a lot of data. A cheap USB external drive used for a backup once in a while might be worth consideration. I know I wouldn’t want to wake up one day and find I had lots 20 years of music collecting

Up to you of course, but there are easy and moderately cheap options if you decide to go that path.
