QNAP as Domain Controller - Recursive DNS?

Hey all,
I was wanting to move away from using a Windows Server as domain controller for a couple of reasons:

  • Don’t want to maintain Windows Server
  • I really only need recursive DNS (bypass ISP and straight to root hints).

If I run my QNAP as a DC is there a huge performance hit?
Does the DNS server do recursive DNS?

I did see this as a QPKG, anyone have experience with it as an alternative?

Hi Willo, Currently the NAS Domain Controller does not support Recursive DNS. May I know the complete scenario on Recursive DNS? It is a little vague for me about “bypass ISP and straight to root hints” you mentioned. If using NAS as domain controller, do you need to query domain controller for the complete FQDN of the domain?

Hey Tim,
I actually don’t need a domain controller, it was the only thought I had at the time to get a DNS server. I currently have one which only serves as a DNS server for recursive resolution.

I don’t want my DNS requests logged. I found a server on MyQnap and it works perfectly and much quicker than my old one. One less machine to manage.

Hi Willo,
I think you were asking for a DNS server product then, and currently QNAP does not have a qpkg officially. MyQnap.org is not hosted by QNAP. I guess you already got what you need then?
