QNAP TR-004, may I fill 2 bays with HDD, and fill the other two later?

Hi!

Just purchased a QNAP TR-004, using it as a RAID 10.

As they work in pair of two, may I insert 2 HDD (6 TB), start my backup (there’s enough room, I need 5 TB)), and add 2 more HDD later? Or do I need to start it with the 4 HDD inserted?

macOS Tahoe 26.1

RAID 10 requires a minimum of 4 drives. You could add two later but if you have all 6 drives now, I would build the entire array out now.

The TR units do not support RAID migration or expansion, so all drives ned to be present right away.

Also better to do a RAID5, you will see any useful gains from RAID10 here.

Thanks for the helpful answer.

I’m using the QNAP TR-004 to store pictures, that I want to have access with Adobe Lightroom Classic to develop them. Isn’t RAID 10 quicker than RAID 5 to have access to the files?

Not really, the TR is not fast enough to make use of any random performance increase and your usage is sequential anyways.
