I am not an IT person. I come from Drobo. I have a QNap TVS H1288 that I hired someone to set up. He did the app, etc. It is working. Now I have a TR-004. The H1288X is for archive storage. This one I want to use for my current work. Can someone tell me how to set up this drive properly for RAID, so I have a safety setup for content if one of the drives fails? I can’t seem to figure out how to get it to appear on the app like the other one either. So speak to me like I am a 5-year-old. And walk me through getting it on the app, then how to set it up for safety. I put 28 TB drives in two bays, should I fill all four? I am on Mac as well. Or point me to a YouTube video that is clear about setup for Mac.
The TR-004 is basically a fancy USB drive. It is not a NAS like the TVS-h1288x. To use the TR-004 you have two options:
1.) Add it to your TVS-h1288x to increase the number of drives you have available for storage.
2.) Use it like a USB drive with your PC/Mac.
If you choose the second option, I believe there are some hardware switches on the TR-004 that can be used to set how you want to configure your drives. It can also be done with software that QNAP provides.
IMO, the best setup is going to be RAID5. In that configuration you will get the storage capacity of 3 of your drives with basically redundancy with the fourth. You should use all drives of the same size otherwise, the total RAID size will be based on the smallest size drive.
I’m not sure why you want to use the TVS-h1288x just for archive. That is a really nice and really powerful NAS. It has a ton of capability that will just be wasted if all you do is use it to archive data. You could have purchased a much lower cost NAS just to do that.

Regarding your comment, “I can’t seem to figure out how to get it to appear on the app like the other one either,” could you please clarify what you mean? Are you looking for it to display various applications in the same way your NAS does?
