QNAP TR00x and software management: visible through a router?

Hello,
I have a question about the QNAP TR00x series.
The manual states that it should be connected to a computer’s USB port or to the back of another NAS in the series.
But in my case, I connected it to my router’s USB port (as a network storage drive but without the “network” overlay).

Can it be managed through my router’s USB port?
(The manual doesn’t indicate this.)

Thank you.

No, your router cannot “manage” the DAS, it should be able to see it’s block storage (if the file system is readable by the router OS)

Thanks for the reply.
I realize the typo in the request (wording/translation error).
Basically, I’m not asking if it can be managed by the router software.

But if it’s connected to the router’s USB port,
is it seen by the RAID MANAGER software on the PC?
(Does the software scan USB devices (other than RJ45) connected to my router?)

No.

It will not.

The router is a independent device. Which will not relay any signals from USB port to your network. So your RAID Manager software on PC will not know the TR-00x exists.

Some router do have features to share files from external drives from USB, in this case the TR-00x are just considered as drives. It maybe recognized by the router software and do sharing in some cases, but it is out of the original design. Which is for NAS/PC/macOS.

You might also consider setting up a Hardware RAID. You can find the instructions in the user manual on pages P.25–29:
QNAP External RAID Enclosure User Guide

Make sure your router is rated for the power requirements, you don’t want to burnt out your router or put your data at risk if the drives can’t be sufficiently powered.

This doesn’t sound like an ideal setup scenario. As mentioned it is extremely unlikely the router can do anything more than supply (some) power, but technically you never stated what router you actually have.

The TR units have their own powersupply, doubt that the USB port is any harder taxed than other external storage devices

Good to know (I didn’t look at the specs). Still not a setup I would recommend and really depends on the quality of the router. For some reason it really bothers me seeing what people try and do with routers and other devices, that they aren’t really designed to do.

They are often the first to wonder why their USB port or router won’t work reliably any more.

Initially, I had two solutions (which I wanted to try - if not one, then possibly the other)

Either, I plugged it into my router’s USB port and managed it remotely via the OMV software (installed on a mini PC) and connected it via Ethernet
(indirect control)

Or, I plugged it into the OMV USB port (installed on a mini PC), and connected it via Ethernet
(direct control)

First solution
TR started (disk inserted) but it wasn’t seen by my router (and therefore the PC)

Second solution (I haven’t reinstalled my driver yet)

Don’t think the RAID Manager software will work via anything other than direct USB connection (TR are DAS after all)
