QNAP TS-228A powers on but does not boot properly or connect to the network

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a used QNAP TS-228A that was advertised as unused. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work correctly, and I would appreciate some help diagnosing the problem.

Symptoms:

  • The NAS powers on, and the fan runs.

  • The startup beep behavior is inconsistent. Sometimes I hear one beep, and on some earlier attempts I heard two beeps.

  • Sometimes the HDD LED turns on when a drive is installed.

  • The NAS is not detected by Qfinder Pro.

  • It does not appear in my router’s connected devices or DHCP client list.

  • The LAN LEDs behave inconsistently. The front LAN indicator sometimes lights up, and the rear Ethernet port has occasionally blinked, but the connection does not remain active.

  • On one occasion, the NAS briefly appeared in my router’s device list, but disappeared shortly afterwards.

What I have tried:

  • Tested with and without a hard drive installed.

  • Tested with a different Ethernet cable and a different router port.

  • Tried another 12 V, 5 A power supply. The behavior was the same.

  • Tried the RESET button, holding it for both 3–5 seconds and around 10 seconds, but there was no noticeable response.

  • Tried the official USB recovery procedure using two different USB flash drives prepared with Rufus and the recovery image for the TS-228A.

  • During the recovery attempts, I only heard one beep. I did not hear the three short beeps that should indicate that recovery has started.

The NAS sometimes powers on normally from the outside, but it never completes a reliable boot or becomes accessible over the network.

My questions:

  1. Could this be a corrupted firmware or DOM flash issue?

  2. Could the Ethernet controller or motherboard be faulty?

  3. Is there another way to recover the TS-228A if the USB recovery procedure does not start?

  4. Are there any diagnostic steps I can safely perform before assuming that the motherboard is defective?

I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Check the BIOS battery ?

I checked the CMOS battery. It is a CR1220, and its measured voltage is 2.36 V.

However, the NAS behaves exactly the same with the battery installed and removed. It still produces two beeps during startup in both cases.

So far, replacing or removing the CMOS battery has not changed anything.

Could this point to a problem with the eMMC flash memory or the motherboard rather than the CMOS battery?

Thanks for your help!
