I’m experiencing extremely slow transfer speeds when backing up my MacBook to my NAS and I can’t figure out why.
I’m using an M4 MacBook Pro and a QNAP TS-453D. Until now, the NAS has mainly been used for media streaming (Plex), and it works perfectly for that.
I recently decided to use the NAS as a backup destination for Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner over Wi-Fi. However, when I start a backup, the transfer speed drops to around 10 Mbps, and macOS estimates 2–3 days to complete the backup. Because of this, I usually end up cancelling the job.
What’s confusing is that when I test the connection using OpenSpeedTest, I’m getting around 400 Mbps. I’ve also tested all the Ethernet Cat5e cables, and they’re in good condition with no issues.
My network is 2.5 Gb, so these speeds make no sense at all. At this point, I’m pretty frustrated and not sure where the bottleneck is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
