QNAP TS264 using almost 100% CPU with Jellyfin

Hello,

I have a QNAP TS-264 with a WD Red Plus 6TB drive. QTS firmware version is 5.2.4.3079. Jellyfin version is 10.10.6-02. I am new to all of this so please bear with me.

I shut down the NAS to make sure I was starting fresh and after it fires up, the CPU sits at around 2-3% (viewing on Chrome on my laptop). If I launch Jellyfin (on my LG C3 TV) and try to watch a 2160p (4k) movie, it jumps to 99+% and the movie won’t play. It might load and play for 30 seconds or so and then buffer non-stop to the point it errors out and won’t let me play it. With 1080p, CPU usage jumps to about 40-50% and plays just fine.

Here is the kicker… if I try to do the same on my Pixel 9 Pro XL on Jellyfin (using VLC to do the actual watching), the CPU usage doesn’t jump past 10% and I am able to watch anything and everything just fine.

Are there any settings I can mess around with to make this work? Should I ditch Jellyfin and use something else? Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like the NAS is transcoding in software (and the tiny Celeron CPU cannot cope)

How did you install Jellyfin? (qpkg, container, etc)

I installed it using qpkg and I also downloaded the Jellyfin-1 docker in the container station.

With docker you need to use compose to pass the gpu through

Can you see your igpu in the qpkg?
