QNAP TVS-473 Keeps Turning Off

My QNAP keeps ramdomly turning off, no explanation that I can see, I’ll just go to it and it’s turned off. Seems to last anything from a few days to a few weeks. Where’s the best place to look on the system to find out what’s happening? I’m on QTS 5.2.3.3006

Any error messages in dmesg ? Memory faults are always a good candidate for these issues (everything stock or self fiddled ?)

I’m just looking up how to find those, I don’t really know dmesg, google will hopefully point me in the right direction and I will share what I find

Ok, managed to do it, searching the text, the only “error” I see is this:

“[ 8.207133] ACPI: _PR_.P003: Found 2 idle states[ 8.211991] ERST: Error Record Serialization Table (ERST) support is initialized.”

Is there something I should search for?

You can find dmesg by using SSH

Apart from the error above that I found, what should I look for?

memory errors would be my first guess

I searched for the word memory in the dmesg and these are what I found:

Is the memory in your NAS stock or aftermarket ?

I just checked my order (as it’s been 5 years since I set it up), it shipped with 4GB and at the same time I purchased 2x 16GB Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 dimms, looking at the system information (screenshot attached) I see it lists for the 4 slots ( 16GB / 16GB / 2GB / – ), could that mean one of the 2GB dimms may have given up?

As well as my last comment, I see one of the 16GB dimms is in the wrong slot (picture attached) assuming my best course of action here is to remove both 2GB dimms and move the 2nd 16GB dimm to the now vacant blue slot. If that is the issue, I’m surprised it’s been ok for 5 years and only now starting to have issues… maybe the 2GB dimm failing was the straw that broke the camels back.

I would remove all but the original RAM and test, if it still reboots, open a ticket with QNAP but only keep the stock RAM in it (otherwise support could refuse service)

We suggest you try removing the separately installed RAM as a troubleshooting step to rule out the cause. You can also try running a Memory test. Please refer to the guide here:
