Hi -

I don’t want to win official store coupons. I want to buy everyone lunch at QNAP in Taiwan ! My QNAP story is this. I moved to Florida in 1999. I was the “AVID guy” in New York City, and AVID video editors were using AVID Unity and AVID ISIS shared storage servers, which were very expensive. In Florida, no one could afford an AVID Unity or AVID ISIS (soon to become the AVID Nexis) - so a dealer pushed me to learn how to do an alternate to these expensive AVID systems. So I learned Apple Server software, and started to build Apple Server systems using Apple Mac Pro’s with Small Tree hardware (Edgecore in Taiwan), ATTO RAID cards, and CI Design RAID chassis (iStoragePro, which is also a company in Taiwan). I soon switched from ATTO to Areca (also a company in Taiwan).

In 2014 - 2015, Apple decided to get out of the server business, and discontinue their server software. I was in a panic - and I was at the NAB show in Las Vegas, and I saw the first QNAP 10G ethernet products - the TVS-863 and the about to be released TVS-871T. I bought this for a client of mine in Florida, and it worked great for professional video editing. I put the TVS-871T in the same facility as a $60,000 Facilis 24 drive SAN system, and the QNAP TVS-871T performed as well, and as fast as the Facilis shared storage system. That was the day I switched to “QNAP only” - and have never used another system until this day in October 2026.

edit - I did a google search to determine when Apple discontinued MacOS X Server - and it states April 2022. This is NOT accurate information. I probably would never have learned QNAP, had Apple kept selling and supporting new versions of their server software.

edit 2 - one of the first QNAP TVS-871T systems I ever installed was at Adrenaline Films in Orlando Florida in 2015. This product is STILL in service to this day. The latest firmware I updated it to was QTS 5.2.8.3332 build 20251128
