Hi, trying out the beta-version of QSync Client on Windows 11.
It constantly sits at aprx. 3-4% CPU use when idling and doing “nothing”. This should be aprx. 0% (which is the case for Google Drive as comparison).
Pausing all tasks has no effect.
It’s not doing “nothing” - it’s actually monitoring your paired folders keeping an eye open for any changes to them so it can sync them to the NAS. I don’t think Google drive does the same sort of sync mechanism.
I wouldn’t worry about 3-4% CPU. It’s probably a process that will readily yield to other processes when needed.
You have a nice beefy CPU on your PC. You don’t have to sent Intel or AMD additional money when you use it more!
I am sure you have plenty of Microsoft processes that are doing “nothing” and taking up CPU time.
Also, keep in mind - it is a beta version. So not all code is necessarily optimized.
Thank you for commenting!
I understand fully what it does, and how it should do it. QSync Client is a direct analogy to Google Drive desktop client which does the same: monitors for file changes and syncs them when appropriate.
However it should be doing “nothing”, almost, when in steady-state: it should work event-driven and thus only do actual work upon changes. This is obviously not the case with continued CPU-use when in steady-state - this points to some busy-algorithm being present.
I bring this forward only in the hope that it will be improved as the client matures and moves out of beta.
BTW I do “worry” about any unwarranted cpu-use. It points to poor implementation and hurts battery-life with absolutely no gains.
So,hoping QNAP will improve this to reach usual high level of functionality. Have been using QNAP NAS’s for 15+ years with great joy
(My background:30+ years as developer, It architect etc).
Thanks for your report! We totally get your concern about CPU usage.
We’re escalating this to our relevant department and asking them to find ways to optimize it!
