QSYNC Drive Migration

Hi,

Sorry if this was addressed somewhere else. I did a research and didn’t find exactly what was going on.

I have a 1TB SSD that has 2 folders synced with QSYNC. Both have Space-Saving Mode enbled.

Suddently, this SSD showed signs of failure. Nothing serious, but I wanted to be safe and replace it.

I got another 1TB SSD and, on Windows, tried to drag & drop. My 600GB data suddently was turned into 1.3TB something discovered data and the system said it needed 300+ GB more to complete the transaction. Odd.

Some folders had the cloud icon and some the check icon, as if the cloud icons were only in the NAS, but I don’t think that was true. The folder on the NAS also had 600GB and the quota on QSYNC central also showed 600GB quota, so everything looking good. I was confident everything that was on the NAS was on the SSD too.

I had nothing on smart delete but I didn’t find where to be sure if the NAS had anything different from the SSD.

I unplugged both SSD’s, made the copy on a Mac and everything worked flawlessly.

I put back the new SSD, started the service again and suddently I had a feeling something was off, that the 1.3TB warning was that I had some files on NAS that were not synced on SSD and now it would be deleted by the new sync.

I plugged back in my original SSD, synchronized and tried to move again to see how much space it would ask, to see if anything changed. It actually said that it needs 250GB something, a bit less than before, so I panicked a little.

I checked the logs. The last entry on File Update Center was 3 days ago. Smart Delete File Management had nothing on it. But still, I was a bit afraid that I was doing something wrong. I get a lot of “Synchronizing” messages on QSYNC but I figure it’s just a check, it’s not actually syncing any data.

Well, to my questions:

  1. What’s the best way to make this migration? Just copy & paste as I was doing and then put it on the same letter mount? Or it would be to delete the paired folders and make the same pairing from scratch? In my head the best way would be to plug in a new SSD and do the transaction with QSYNC, but I think that’s more a HBS feature. I’m still learning the QNAP syncing echosystem.

  2. Where can I see clearly what’s on the SSD and what’s not by the Space-Saving Mode? The Explorer showed some cloud icons but I’m not sure that was true. Is this feature only a smart delete thing or the NAS can decide if he wants to clear some data on the SSD and keep it only on the NAS? It’s only a manual feature? If it is, for sure I didn’t get anything deleted, because I didn’t check anything to be NAS-only, but the difference in size is bothering me. It’s and awesome feature, but I can’t manage it pristine clear. Am I missing something? Still reading about it, but I’m on a time pressure to get everything right as soon as possible.

EDIT: Now that I plugged in back the original SSD, I can’t see anymore any QSYNC icon besides the round synchronization arrow. Doesn’t have any cloud or checked anymore and I’m a bit afraid of doing again the sync and deleting anything by accident.

Also, how can I recover the original QSYNC icons? Doesn`t show on any SSD now. I’ll have to delete and add again the paired folders? Doesn’t show the QSYNC menu too when I right click.

EDIT 2: I think I just saw a folder that’s incomplete, but I can’t see or find anything on the logs. How can I check what I got deleted? This would be very helpfull.

EDIT 3: Is Space-Saving mode only on cloud? I thought it was on NAS. That would be huge.

Thanks so much in advance for every help.

Cheers,
Gustavo

For the migration you shall firat figure out a single source of truth: whether the NAS or the PC have the most correct data? Usually it will be mich better to first check your qsync has finished syncing, and just use another local folder to sync back the qsync files, (that’s why we use qsync right?)

For the space-saving mode, it’s just similar with OneDrive.
If you see a cloud icon on Windows Explorer it means the file is not available locally, and it’ll be downloaded when you try to open it. A green tick means it’s synced with the cloud (the NAS is the cloud here).
DO NOT operate on these files by mounting this disk on another system. Those “cloud-only” file will not be found there.
Windows has a feature called “storage sense” and it will make files cloud-only when you don’t have enough storage. Also some settings in Qsync client provide a similar feature. Also if the file was changed on the cloud but not used afterwards on PC, it will become cloud-only.
Space-saving has nothing to do with smart-deleting. Smart-deleting was introduced before space-saving mode. It means that when you manually delete file from local it will not be deleted from NAS.

To recover the icons, I think you’ll need to remove and setup again the syncing pair.

Your folder is incomplete POSSIBLY because the syncing pair is no longer valid. In such a state all cloud-only files will not be visible. If qsync deleted some of your files it should be seen from qsync client or qsync central logs.
