QTS 5.2.11 - How to Remove the "Version ." Text from the Login Screen

NAS Model: QNAP TVS-871 (8-bay)
Firmware: QTS 5.2.11

On my QNAP TVS-871 running QTS 5.2.11, the text “Version .” remained visible in the bottom-left corner of the login screen, even though the actual firmware version number was no longer displayed.

I wanted to completely remove this residual text.

After investigating the issue, I inspected the system configuration file /etc/config/uLinux.conf via SSH using the following command:

grep -inE 'login|version|firmware' /etc/config/uLinux.conf

I identified the following parameter on line 61:

showVersion = 1

This parameter was responsible for displaying the firmware version on the login screen.

After connecting via SSH and switching to the administrator account, I first created a backup of the original configuration file:

cp -a /etc/config/uLinux.conf /etc/config/uLinux.conf.bak

I then changed the parameter using this command:

sed -i 's/^showVersion = 1$/showVersion = 0/' /etc/config/uLinux.conf

I verified that the new value was correctly applied:

showVersion = 0

After performing a forced refresh of the login page using Ctrl + F5, the “Version .” text completely disappeared.

No NAS reboot was required. No impact on QTS functionality, services, RAID volumes or installed applications was observed.

A backup of the original configuration file was retained to allow restoration if necessary.

I’m sharing this solution in case it helps other QNAP users experiencing the same issue.

No such issue here:

TS-853BU on QTS 5.2.11.3661 and no such text is visible

Since my NAS hit the market well before yours, I believe it inherited some leftover configuration files that caused the issue I encountered.

Best would be to open a ticket so QNAP can find out why the flag is not set correctly upon update to 5.0.x (where firmware display was removed from the login)

I have an even-older TS-251+ with the same QTS version that also doesn’t have this issue.

@Hyperia, what config block section is that key-value contained in please? It will appear between square brackets before the key-value is shown:

grep -iE '^(\[|showVersion)' /etc/config/uLinux.conf

You can use the built-in configuration management binaries included in all QTS version to change this value instead.

The showVersion key is located in the [System] section of /etc/config/uLinux.conf.

I changed its value to 0 using QNAP’s built-in configuration utility:

setcfg System showVersion 0 -f /etc/config/uLinux.conf

You can verify the setting with:

getcfg System showVersion -f /etc/config/uLinux.conf

It should return 0.

Remove the QTS watermark from the QNAP login screen (QTS 5.2)

If you want to remove the QTS watermark displayed in the bottom-right corner of your QNAP NAS login screen, here is a method that works on my QNAP TVS-871 running QTS 5.2.11.

The solution is to remove only the HTML block responsible for displaying the watermark.

1. Connect to your NAS via SSH using an administrator account.

2. Back up the original file:

cp -p /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html.bak

3. Remove the watermark HTML block:

sed -i '/<div class="desktop-watermark-ct">/,/<\/div>/d' /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html

4. Verify that the watermark block has been removed:

grep -nE 'desktop-watermark|watermark.svg' /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html

The command should return no results.

5. Refresh the login page:

Press Ctrl + F5 in your browser to force a full page refresh.

The QTS watermark should now be gone, without affecting the login form or the rest of the page.

To restore the original file:

If you want to undo the change, run:

cp -p /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html.bak /home/httpd/cgi-bin/login.html

Note: This modification affects the login page file. A future QTS update may restore the original file, in which case you may need to repeat the procedure. Keep your backup.

Tested configuration: QNAP TVS-871 – QTS 5.2.11, build 20261014.

This method has been tested on this configuration. It has not been verified on every QNAP model or QTS version.

Excellent, you’ve found the utility. :nerd:

Nope, I stand corrected. The TS-251+ was released a year after the TVS-871.

I could, but I suspect my ticket would immediately fall by the wayside much like the topics I try to post here, which end up getting deleted without any explanation ! …

I only deleted a duplicate topic in the same subforum, no need to start more than one

It’s simply to make my topics easier to index, and potentially help some people find a solution without having to scour various subreddits. But I do understand, all the same.

Thanks for sharing your solution with the community! If you run into any other issues or have more tips to share, feel free to post them here. Thanks!
