I have 2 QNAP NAS devices which I use only for file backups for computers on my home network. The primary NAS is TS-253A, and the backup is TS-230. Everything is scripted at this point and has been working glitch-free for a couple of years. I just upgraded both NAS devices to QTS 5.2.8.3332 tonight, and now HBS 3 sync from the 253A to the 230 no longer works using RTRR. I switched back to Remote NAS account, and sync is running again as I type this.
With RTRR, the sync is failing to authenticate, and then the connection gets blocked for 5 minutes each time. I’m sure I’ve got the password correct: I have it saved in a secure (encrypted) password manager. In Control Panel, in the Security tab, I found a setting for RTRR to “Exclude internal IP addresses” from blocking after too many failed login attempts and enabled that on the backup NAS, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
This issue is not holding me up, as I’m able to sync using the Remote NAS account, but I would like to get the RTRR option working again. Thanks.
Second, I don’t know what versions you were using before, but I think at one point there was a change in the admin accounts/passwords uses for RTRR. So go into your setup for the sync, and set the passwords and accounts again. Basically set up the sync all over again from an authentication stand point.
Thank you. Just updating a specific sync wasn’t working, I kept getting the same authentication error. So, I thought I would try deleting the defined Remote NAS Storage Space, and re-add it. In order to do that, I had to delete all jobs which referred to that remote storage space. Then, I deleted the storage space, recreated it, then recreated all the jobs I had deleted. And that worked; I am now running a sync job using RTRR.
I have a small home system, and I only had 4 jobs defined using the remote storage space. This solution would obviously not be feasible for any professional environment, or even for a home system with a more involved backup scheme. I have had my 2 NASs for at least 5 years, and have gone through numerous QTS upgrades. This is the first time RTRR got broken. So, there was something about this particular release that caused this breakage.
I would ask QNAP to put a plan in place so that if RTRR becomes incompatible as a result of an upgrade, customers have a procedure to follow that keeps their backup procedures working.
Well, that actually doesn’t surprise me. I don’t know what you were upgrading from, but as I said, my understanding is that there was a change in the admin login for RTRR somewhere along the way. From what I have seen, once you create an “account” setting up the job, there’s not a way to change it later. So you have to basically recreate the job and re-authenticate the login.
Agreed that for a system with a large number of jobs that this could be a problem. But sometimes security fixes require it…
