No one in the community was able to figure out why my QNAP Time Machine backup was unable to restore my system to an erased drive … or a way to test it and prepare for it to work if there’s a next time.
I merged this post into your old topic
If you need QNAP to take a look at this, please open a ticket
Thank you, that’s what I was looking for.
When I looked for a spot to open a ticket a couple of weeks ago, I saw the link that directed me to the community for help. But I looked again just now and found the link for a new ticket.
Honestly, I think your issue may be more of an Apple one than QNAP…
Maybe.
It was a connection error and then I’d still like help to solve it. I was working with Apple to do the restore but they didn’t know how to connect to the QNAP. I confirmed that the Mac and the backup were on the same network. I have confidence that the QNAP works because I can recover individual files from it using Time Machine. But when I needed to do a full restoration, it wasn’t available. There’s a step in the recovery where I had to put in the address so I could connect to the backups. Using the IP address didn’t work. I’m trying to discover now what the correct address is so I’m able to do the connection if there’s a next time.
Well, the IP address of the NAS is certainly the address you need to use. When using the TimeMachine process for accessing the TM directory, you have to make sure you enter the full path. In my case it is:
smb://NA9D-NAS/Tardis
or
smb://192.168.0.1/Tardis
Where my shared folder for TM backups is named Tardis. If you only entered the IP address of the NAS, then that wouldn’t get you there. Also, keep in mind the authentication needed to access the share is that of the NAS, not your Mac.
I hope this helps.
