I’ve been testing the Quts Hero beta and overall the Qtier feature is very promising. The automated tiering works well and the performance benefits are noticeable. However, I’ve run into a limitation that significantly affects flexibility and future upgrades.
Issue
Once Qtier is enabled on a storage pool, there appears to be no option to:
-
Disable Qtier
-
Remove the existing SSD tier
-
Replace the SSD tier with a new SSD (for example, a larger-capacity drive)
This creates a problem when upgrading hardware. I currently have a new, larger SSD that I want to use for the tier, but the UI provides no path to remove the old SSD tier or reconfigure Qtier without destroying the entire pool.
Impact
-
Prevents SSD upgrades without full pool rebuild
-
Reduces flexibility for long‑term storage planning
-
Makes Qtier risky to enable during beta testing since it cannot be undone
-
Forces downtime and data migration for what should be a simple tier replacement
Requested Enhancements
-
Add an option to disable Qtier on a pool
Allow users to turn off tiering without deleting the pool. -
Add the ability to remove an existing SSD tier
Similar to removing cache devices. -
Allow replacing SSD tier drives with larger ones
A guided workflow (evacuate tier → remove drive → add new SSD → rebuild tier) would be ideal.
These improvements would make Qtier far more usable in real-world environments where storage grows and hardware gets upgraded over time.
