QuTS Hero its implementation of ZFS

I’ve read that some implementations all of the use of wasted disk space when building a RAID array with disks of varying sizes. For instance, if I build a five-disk RAID5 array with four 4TB drives and one 18TB drive because I don’t have an additional 4TB drive to install, I’ve heard that the “wasted” 14TB on the large drive can be used for something else.

Is this a fact and, if so, does the QNAP version of ZFS allow for this?

Thank you.

I don’t believe so. I am pretty sure that if you use different sized drives, the “excess” space in the larger sized drives is indeed wasted. Unless something has changed between QuTS Hero 5.2 and QuTS Hero 6.0.

Thanks Jon. I figured I’d ask just in case. Maybe I read it somewhere else like in TrueNAS, etc.

Have a good weekend!
