Rackmount server - alternate cooling options?

I have a TS-h1887XU-RP rackmount QNAP in my home environment, with the Intel® Xeon® E-2336. Its in a rack which is not totally enclosed - the rack is very well ventilated as its enclosed in mesh rather than glass or metal front and back and on both sides.

Overall the system performs well, but I’ve got a consistent 17-25 degrees C difference between the reported system temperature and CPU temperature. The system temp can show 43C while the system can be at 65C under a light load. System temp will jump to to around 48-50C under load when the fans kick into high, and CPU temp can jump to around 72 before levelling off at about 67C until the CPU usage drops.

Anyone got any alternate cooling method suggestions for this QNAP like a different CPU cooling block, or different types of cooling fans instead of the four that are in there now? Or maybe the thermal paste wasn’t properly applied? Or is the difference in temps nothing to worry about?

I’ve got a small fan angled up behind the unit to try to push the air exhaust from the server, but since most of the server case is enclosed there’s a limit to external help.

What smart fan setting do you run? Cool/Normal/Quiet?

It’s set to normal mode. I’m running QuTS Hero. The other options are quiet and performance.

try performance and see what the temps say

What @dolbyman said, you should go into high fan / performance mode.

The 2U units are very hard to cool and generally run hotter than the 3U and 4U units so this is your only option in stock condition and it still will not be as cool as a taller NAS.

There are a couple of other options if you are a bit more “ambitious” but they are more difficult with the easiest one being that you can reserve two more rackmount heights for cooling your NAS. You can do this for example by adding a multi 80mm fan segment in the front above the NAS and open the lid:

And you could add another one in the back for good measure with one array pushing and the other pulling.

You will have to seal the area between the drives and the built in fans though to maintain a funnel effect when you take off the lid, I did this with some simple paper based masking tape that leaves no residue.

ACInfinity do some nice fans for racks.
