Raid 5 2 drive failure? Am I SOL?

Recently got unrecovered read /medium errors (see below) and my storage volumes aren’t showing up. When I look at Disks/VJBOD it shows drives 1 and 2 are inactive. Log shows the hardware problem is with Disk 2.
System details:

  • Your Operating System you are using to access your NAS

    • Windows 11
  • NAS model

    • TS 464
  • Firmware Version/Build numbers - not just “The latest”

    • QTS 5.2.7.3256
  • Network Setup (ie Single Port or Port Trunking)

    • Single Port
  • Drive Configuration: (ie SingleDrive, RAID0, JBOD, RAID1, RAID5, RAID6, RAID10)

    • RAID5

    • 4 WD Red 4tb WD40EFPX

My questions:

  1. It seems like a hardware problem with Disk 2 and I should hot swap it
  2. If so, why is Disk 1 inactive?
  3. Did I just lose 2 disks and is my RAID5 screwed?
  4. If so, is there any way to salvage the remaining data on the other 2 disks?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, looks like 2 drives failed, this is the point where you have to resort to backups (always have them) or consult an expensive data recovery specialist

How common is it for two drives to fail at the same time? Am I just incredibly unlucky?

If the drives have the same age and are from the same batch..there is a chance. Remember, in a degraded RAID5 with a missing member, all remaining drives NEED to work flawlessly or it’s game over

You could check the logs, maybe the drives have been throwing errors for months.

You could also try shutting down, reseating the drives and powering back up. Slim chance if you haven’t done it already, but if you can get it to connect at least 1, maybe you can pull a backup (be ready).

Regarding this issue, please feel free to open a support ticket and we’ll look into whether there’s anything we can do to help. Also, may we ask how long the drive has been in use? Thanks!

I did open a ticket and we verified the two drives are indeed dead. Drives were bought together about 2 years ago.

I hope you have backups! If not, this was a hard lesson to learn. RAID <> Backup!
