Having a backup NAS is wonderful. I would definitely get one that can support Hero if you plan on running Hero. And get enough drives that you have the same capacity. Then you can do snapshot vaulting.

I looked at this but it has been a while since I looked at memory and hard drives. Built two high-end PC’s last year and I guess glad I did it then.

Anyway, probably cannot quite justify the setup you suggested based on what I see. Can I still use QNAP tools to do 1 way hybrid sync (copy) from QuTS to QTS NAS backup?

The minimum configuration I could come up with for the backup is:

TS-463 8GB

2 nvme os drives 500gb

4 -12TB regular ironwolf

QXG-10G1T 10GB card

Did I miss something or is there another unit since I am going in this direction?

Now if something pops up remanufactured or something that might change my mind. Have no issue with that but didnt see anything.

I am a little concerned about one more device to maintain etc. but that is the tradeoff vs. just using an ext drive. For example still need to update my TS-h874 to firmware 3410 which is being offered at login and now 3451 is out.

That is only a QTS-Update (QTS 5.2.9.3451)

For QuTShero is the lastest version h5.2.9.3410.

Or you must change to QuTShero h5.3.x or QuTShero 6.0 beta

I think you should buy more RAM for your new TS-464.

My TS-264 with QTS 5.2.x work fine with 40 GB RAM.

I am on Quts hero. I know about QuTShero 6.0 beta and don’t want to go there. But what is the QuTShero h5.3.x branch? I just want stable…

I bet your unit runs well with 40GB😀! I am just trying to get basic backup functionality and near 10Gbps speeds. If I am just getting more memory to run QuTS Hero not seeing the advantage in my use case.

Does hybrid sync 1 way copy work if the two NAS units are on different versions of firmware and one is QuTS and the other is QTS?

I use QuTShero 5.2.9.x on my TVS-h674.

QuTShero 5.3.x is only for set up a high-availability environment with two QNAP NAS.

I have no problem with hbs3 backup jobs between QuTShero and QTS. I use this help

Thanks but wow. So if my main NAS is on QuTS and my backup NAS is on QTS I can’t just run hybrid sync to backup? I have to do all this to set permissions correctly?

Yes. You can use HBS to back up a hero NAS to a QTS NAS. Not a problem. I was doing that from my TS-873A to my TS-451 until I got my TVS-672XT.

If you don’t want to add an additional NAS, and you have an available PCIe card slot open. You could add something like the QNAP TL-D800S expansion unit.It supports full 10GB transfers, and is listed as compatible with your TVS-H874. You could then use HBS3 to set up all your backups to/from cloud, your existing NAS, and other sources.

Thank you. If I can run QuTS, I am going to look at a 6 bay unit and buy 4 drives for now. That is way more than I need for my current and some years in future to backup my used NAS space. But for the minor difference in price makes sense.

I have seen inconsistent data on QuTS on the TS-664? If I add 8GB more of memory for a total of 16GB can I run QuTS?

I am looking through the other specs of the TS-664 and TS-673A. Price-wise not that far off. I have no need for the plex and the other video capabilities of the TS-664 if I am using it as a backup only NAS. But…if all other things are equal, perhaps not that bad to have just in case. My main NAS is way more powerful so would use that first for sure.

If a TS-664 and a TS673A each had a 10 GbE installed, and both had 2 NVME drives installed for the OS only, would the NAS to NAS copy speeds be similar?

Finally, it looks like the TS-673A was released one year four months before the TS-664 was so I guess an EOL difference there.

Problem with an expansion enclosure for backups is, that the data is not accessible if the host NAS fails, so a second NAS would be better for backups
