Recommendation for backup NAS for a TVS-H874

Greetings. I like my TVS-H874 and want to backup a few of the shares to a much more inexpensive, but 10Gbps RJ-45 capable NAS. The other shares are already in 3 places in cloud and source PC.

I don’t need media streaming or anything. Will be using mechanical drives.

I am thinking a 4 bay or maybe 6 bay and only fill 4 for now. But then I think I need QuTS to expand then? I probably only need under half the capacityof mine so under 40-50TB useable for the future maybe.

I have started looking at models but this is such a different group than when I looked for my current unit, I don’t think I am evaluating the CPU speed, etc correctly. Open to QNAP remanufactured units.

If after pricing the unit and 4 drives it doesn’t make economic sense, may just hang an external drive off of it. For now a 14TB external would give me enough.

Thanks!

IIRC with QuTS you can’t add drives to a raid group. Just for backup you don’t need a very powerful NAS. 4 bays are probably enough since drive sizes are increasing rapidly.

Hello,

with QuTShero you can:

Expanding a storage pool by adding a new RAID Group
Expanding a storage pool by adding disks to a RAID group
When you adding 2 disks, you can change your RAID 5 to RAID 6

I think the TS-664 or the TS-673A is enough for the backup

I agree with Becker. Either of those two NAS units are more than enough for doing just backup.

But the TS-673A at least does not have a 10Gbps port (not sure about the TS-664). You would need to add one via the PCI slots (what I did). The two NIC ports on that NAS are 2.5 Gbit ports. So if you have the right switch you can LAG them and get a 5 Gbps trunk.

I think when it firdt came out that was no supported.

Thanks, that’s what I thought, that QuTS supported expansion.
And thanks for the specific model recommendations, will check them out.

Need to find the quote button for replies.

It’s the “+” button:

I was looking throught the 4 and 6 bay options of all units mentioned. They all say you can upgrade to QuTS but they all come with 8GB. That is listed as the minimum for QuTS but if I recall when I researched my current main unit, you really need 16MB and I am reading that too. Do I have that right?

Thank you for your support! I’ll check with our internal team for suitable model recommendations, and also see if there are any ongoing promotions for new purchases on our online store.

16 MB is the minimum RAM for using features in QuTS Hero like inline deduplication and compression. Hero will run in 8 MB but some features will not be available.

I guess you mean GB not MB.

Also ARC will be disabled at/below 8GB

:man_facepalming: Yes GB.

I have edited my post

Thanks! Trying to resist the urge to buy more hardware than I need just for backup which from building PC’s usually want. I think i’m looking at a 4 bay with 8GB and QTS vs. a 6 bay upgraded to 16GB with QuTS. But 10Gbps network card either way.

My sense is the second option will perhaps be overkill but worth looking at the price comparison if maybe a promo or refurb.

My TVS-h874 has been awesome but don’t need to meet those specs of course

So if you want just backup, you could look at one of the USB based expansion boxes. Stick new drives in there, create a RAID and use those for backup.

You have lots of options if you don’t want to spend the money on a new NAS.

Yes, thanks USB is my third option for sure. My only issue there is I can’t locate it away from the NAS.
Seems like I have no intention of expanding my RAID, QTS and 8GB should do it also?

Thanks

The memory you need is wholly dependent on what you want to do with your NAS. If you stay with QTS and use the NAS only for file sharing, then 8 GB is likely enough.

If you want to run containers, Plex, etc, then you may want more memory. It’s just so dadgum expensive right now.

What you ultimately do, depends on your needs and your budget. You can find some decent deals on eBay as well.

If you look at my signature, you will see I have a TS-873A, a TVS-672XT and a TS-451. The TS-451 was my original NAS and I fell in love with QNAP (plus the price was right - free!). Then I wanted more capability so I bought the TS-874A and used the TS-451 as one of my backup locations. Problem though I couldn’t use it to vault my snapshots. I had some CPU capacity issues with the TS-873A and found the TVS unit on eBay with drives. It was a steal. Now it’s my backup but kinda become an equal primary as I’ve upgraded the CPU. It’s kinda fun having the 3 devices!

You have quite a nice collection!

I got my TVS-h874 in 2025 so got 32GB. Anything I do with streaming and containers will be on there. This unit would strictly be for file backup from NAS, maybe some access from a PC but nothing needing speed.
