I have an older QNAP TS-569-Pro that I used a a backup target for another QNAP (TS-473A).
On the TS-569-Pro I had a shared folder named Shared, which was a one-way sync target from the TS-473A. This has been in place for a couple years. I wanted to start fresh with the sync, so I renamed the Shared shared folder to Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27. In FileStation, I have both Shared & Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 folders. I then created a new shared folder named Shared (wanted to preserve the original name), and when I did so I let the system set the path, which it set to Shared. The actual folder with its data still in tact. I did not expect that.
I then checked the path for the shared folder Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27, and the path is set to Shared. From the Path dropdown, it does not show a folder named: Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27, only the original Shared folder, even though both of these folders show up in FileStation.
I SSH’d into the NAS, navigate to /share and both Shared@ & Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27@ exist. Using du -csh in each of the folders return the same amount of data: 1.6TB.
So it seems when I created the Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 shared folder, the system duplicated the data and a actual folder of that name exists, but it does not show up in the Shared Folder Path for selection. I had hoped that shared folder: Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 would have the actual folder Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 set in the path.
You might have noticed I previously suggested opening a support ticket for your shared folder path issue. I’ve removed that suggestion for now, as I’ve identified a potential solution I’d like you to try first. Here’s what you can do:
First, please check if you can directly modify the path of your “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27” folder to the correct one (e.g., /Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27) in its properties.
If direct modification isn’t possible, you could try this approach (ensure your data is backed up first): The concept is to help the system recognize the desired path.
Create a shared folder named Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 with all default settings. (You may need to address any naming conflicts with your existing folder first, ensuring original data is safe).
Modify the path setting of your original data’s shared folder (the one currently named “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27” but with the incorrect path) to become /Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27.
Delete the shared folder entry Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 (the one created in step 1), ensuring you choose NOT to delete the data.
We have received feedback on this and are working on improving these settings. Please let us know if this helps.
Thank you!
Hi @SteveKo,
I was able to modify the path to shared folder ‘Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27’ by keying (actually pasting ‘/Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27’ in the path field. That resulted in an empty folder…see pics. I did not proceed any further. Awaiting your feedback.
We’d like to understand your situation in more detail. Could you please reach out to our Customer Service or open a ticket via the Helpdesk? This will allow us to provide more specific assistance.
Thank you!
Hi @mdt
Yes, now they are pointing to two different folders, and the related paths are correct. Pics attached.
The issue is that when I manually enter the path for shared folder “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27” to point to the existing folder “/Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27”, it cleared out that folder. Not what I was trying to achieve. That folder should contain the original data from /Shared, which would then be my archive of that data. I want to clear the original /Shared folder to then restart the Sync with no target data and regenerate that data from the source NAS. The current result is exactly opposite. And currently, the sync is disabled.
The steps you suggested would not provide the correct results. In the end this is what should exist:
/Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27 should contain the data that previously was (currently still is) in /Shared.
/Shared should be empty. Will re-populate once I re-enable the sync from the source NAS.
As SteveKo suggested, I will get QNAP support involved.
Thanks
You can use File Station in QTS to select all in ‘shared’ and click CUT in right-click menu. And then go to the empty ‘Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27’ and click PASTE in right-click menu. You will get an empty ‘shared’ and all existing data move to ‘Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27’.
Just closing up on this issue here.
I worked with support, and though their suggestions in dealing with the shared folder transition issue were valid, at this point in time what I was left with was a correct shared folder setup (correct names pointing to correct disk folders), but the data that remained was in folder 'Shared" and not. “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27”. So I SSH’d into the unit and moved the data from “Shared” to “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27” from the command line. Much faster and safer than in file station.
All is good now. Got my archive data stored in “Shared_PriorTo_2025-05-27”, and started a new one-way sync from my other NAS to this NASes “Shared” folder.
