Repair or Replace? My TS-251+ Decision

After nearly ten years of trouble-free service, my TS-251+ finally succumbed to the well-known clock degradation problem and greeted me with the full complement of red LEDs.

Since buying a TS-464 last year, the old NAS had been used solely for QVR, so I carefully considered my options:

  1. Install 2TB of M.2 SSD storage in the TS-464 for a silent, low-power solution.
  2. Move the old WD Reds (2 × 3TB) into the spare drive bays for the cheapest option.
  3. Apply the 100Ω resistor fix to the TS-251+.

Option 1 was my preferred choice, as it would have kept both the noise and running costs down, but the price of M.2 storage ruled it out.

In the end, I went with option 3 using a 90 Ohm resistor, and the old TS-251+ now has a new lease of life.

I Have a TS-251+ of similar age so I suppose I can expect the same issue at some point. Is the “resistor fix” detailed somewhere?

Note Step 3 - there is an additional screw on the backplane

It is an easy fix if you have a small soldering iron, or you could use female=-female jump leads:

I assume the temp fix has lasted over a year for you then?

I was just reviewing another thread on this issue and posed a question about what you get if you RMA the 251+ back to QNAP?

If I can get a few more years out of the device with the short term fix, i’ll give it a go too..

As stated in the other thread, the TS-251+ is out of support and no longer RMA’d. You need to do the resistor fix or get a new NAS.

Ah ok.. Are you just recovering the data, or planning on keeping it going 24/7 until it dies? I know you have your 464 as your main unit, but just wondering the plan for the 251+?

My 251+ was at the holiday home so only used as a third back up option and local access. I’m currently accessing the main NAS via VPN and wondering to solder and try to continue using the back up when away, or not to solder and replacing it with something not too expensive in todays climate?? Decisions, decisions…

The 251+ is essentially an NVR. If it goes down I will ask my bank manager for a mortgage for 2Tb of M,2 and install that in the 464 so that QVRPro can run on that. I will reinstall from scratch. The 251 does not owe me anything.
