After nearly ten years of trouble-free service, my TS-251+ finally succumbed to the well-known clock degradation problem and greeted me with the full complement of red LEDs.
Since buying a TS-464 last year, the old NAS had been used solely for QVR, so I carefully considered my options:
- Install 2TB of M.2 SSD storage in the TS-464 for a silent, low-power solution.
- Move the old WD Reds (2 × 3TB) into the spare drive bays for the cheapest option.
- Apply the 100Ω resistor fix to the TS-251+.
Option 1 was my preferred choice, as it would have kept both the noise and running costs down, but the price of M.2 storage ruled it out.
In the end, I went with option 3 using a 90 Ohm resistor, and the old TS-251+ now has a new lease of life.
