Have a TS-453 Pro that just died with the system rebooting. Looking for a recommendation on a replacement model. Is there one where I can use the same drives?
Thanks
Without info about needed performance I would say this as the cheapest option
You can (and should) always consult the migration guide
My TS-453 Pro just died too (after 10 yrs 24/7) - the infamous Intel J1900 degradation issue!
I will attempt the 100 ohm resistor fix - but it is only a temporary fix.
After exchanging emails with NAS Compares, and speaking to QNAP UK Sales, I am having a TS-464 8G delivered tomorrow.
According to the QNAP migration tool, I should be able to just plug my HDDs into the new unit - having made sure that the new unit is updated with the latest firmware beforehand (before HDDs are inserted).
I also got assurance from QNAP UK Sales that, since Jan 2024, the memory in the 8G model can be upgraded.
Something to consider…
That is a (small) step up from the TS-462 I proposed, without info budget or performance needs, very hard to give any sort of advice besides what ‘will work’
The OP asked “Is there one where I can use the same drives”.
The TS-453 Pro uses 4 drives. Therefore, if you use the migration compatibility tool which you usefully linked, you can see that migration would be as simple as updating the TS-464 to the latest firmware (before installing drives), then installing drives and rebooting. This is what I will be doing.
Obviously, the NAS which you suggested (TS-462) is only 2 drives - and the migration tool naturally advises that migration from the TS-453 Pro to the TS-462 is not possible…
The TS-462 is a 4 drive NAS. That’s the 4 in the NAS model.
Oops, yes - my bad. Apologies dolbyman!
Got my TS-464 8G this morning. As promised by QNAP UK Sales, the 8 GB RAM is not soldered - so will be going for a Crucial 16 GB (2x 8GB) kit.
Thanks for the replies and info. Neland let me know how the migration goes. I’m getting the newest version of the 453. We only use our NAS to backup <50GB a night so don’t need anything crazy. I would just like to see the existing data and then I may get new drives anyways as these drives are old.
For simple nightly backups, the TS-462 I mentioned should be the most economical system (and your disks can be moved over)
