Service stopped working in the middle of the night

I’m running a TS-451+D2 QTS 5.2.10.3577. I use it only for a local (my own firewalled internal network) file server and DLNA server. It has worked fine for years, and does exactly what I want from it. Last night the DLNA simply stopped working. I think an update took place, but I had not logged the previous version. All I am looking for is some idea about how to restore the DLNA functionality. Please - I don’t want to install PLEX (and PLEX clients), or Twonky, or “build a much better/faster media server out of an old PC”.

I have uninstalled both the Media Console and the Media Streaming Add On. I made sure that both are enabled. Indexing is enabled. Nothing changed in my file/folder permissions. And I made sure that “Newly discovered devices are automatically allowed to connect to DLNA Media Server” - all the detected client devices are checked, and the list specifically includes the devices that I use to access DLNA. I have made sure that nothing happened in my network configuration, and the QNAP is in the same subnet as everything else in the house. I am at a loss.

Here is one other clue. In the Windows network browser it shows “Media Devices”. Double clicking on that would normally bring up a list of media (DLNA) shares. Instead, it now brings up the 451’s network interface - i.e. the same thing I see when I connect via QFinder. Obviously it is accessible on the network - it is the DLNA function that is not working. It has been flawless for almost 6 years now.

I know that there will be people saying “DLNA is obsolete”…it is not for what I use it for. Some will say that QNAP has quit supporting it…please take note of the fact that it says "Newly discovered devices are automatically allowed to connect to DLNA Media Server. So they obviously still support it unless it happened in the latest update and they didn’t document it.

Make sure you never enable auto updates (qpkg’s OR firmware) just for that reason
