Interestingly enough, I didn’t see an option to choose what type of volume it creates, when you choose to create a new volume from a snapshot import. It does look like it’s making a thick volume again though.
If the data in the volume is somewhat sound, I can at least upgrade to new and bigger disks, create a new thin volume and migrate the data internally.
I have a bit of feedback you can take back to the team if possible. Yesterday, I finished importing the snapshot I have and unfortunately I got the same error again - “Failed to import snapshot”. However, this time there was the added information “Invalid encryption key”, attached to the end. This leads me to believe available storage pool size could have been the issue the first time it failed.
Two points here:
The system should tell you if you need more space available before you can import the snapshot.
Having to import the entire snapshot before it tests whether you mistyped the encryption key, or provided the wrong one is just a really bad experience. This had been going for more than 24h.
Final update. After having provided the correct encryption key and imported the snapshot one final time, it would appear I now have my data back and one big lesson about volumes richer.
Good for you! It’s always difficult to learn stuff like this. I recently made a stupid mistake with a NAS myself. But now that you know, you won’t repeat it again!
