I am looking forward to QuTS hero 6.0 and its immutable snapshot feature. However, for me there still remains a conceptual question regarding the implementation of the protection of these snapshots.
In short: Given that the immutability should prevent even an admin from deleting a snapshot, I was wondering if the logic - in order to not undermine the concept - will extend to the pool level, hence prevent an admin from deleting the storage pool containing an immutable snapshot.
@SteveKo Took the question to the internal team - Are there any news?
IMHO, at some point you have to stop the madness. You have to allow a drive to be reformatted or repartitioned. If for any reason other than to wipe it before you get rid of it.
The purpose of the immutability is for things like accidental file deletion, malware, etc. I think once you get to the level of changing a storage pool, it’s become a completely more “intentional and planned” act.
Hello, I am the colleague responsible for QNAP storage and snapshots.
Regarding the situation you mentioned, we have already discussed it internally. We will be adjusting the operation of immutable snapshots and WORM to achieve a more secure outcome.
There will also be restrictions and safeguards for actions such as deleting from storage pools, providing more reliable protection for immutable snapshots and WORM.
