Search for all versions of a file in QuDedub

So far, it seems to be impossible to find all versions of a file within a versioned backup. You basically have to manually extract each version and search to see if the file is included. Something like this should be a basic function, and I don’t understand why, after all these years, it’s still not included. It doesn’t work with HBS3 on the QNAP nor with the QuDedup Extraction Tool. Or am I just doing something wrong?

Did you ever open a ticket about this?

Yes, about two years ago and now again. That’s when they referred me here as well…

Hello,

Please try this method to see if it works for you:

  1. Mount the File: In FileStation, right-click your .qdff file and select “Mount QuDedup Folder”.
  2. Access Versions: Once mounted, you will see all backup timestamps as individual folders (e.g., GMT+08_2026-01-22...).
  3. Search: Use FileStation to search the exact file you want.

The idea is good and would be conceivable as a workaround. In fact, I have already tried it before. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. This way, I can’t find a file that is included at least once in the backup. I just tried the test again with another backup and another file—again without success.

In general, it should work anyway with the desktop tool QuDedup.

But did it work for you that way?

QuDedup Tool can still function normally. However, unfortunately, QuDedup Tool does not offer a search feature, which is why I recommend you use FileStation.

That’s all correct, QuDedup works in a very rudimentary way. But there’s no search function, hence my feature request. And in File Station, files that I know are definitely present are not found when searching through an entire archive—so that doesn’t work either. That’s why I’m asking if it works for you or anyone else.

I was also hoping that something as fundamental as this would be added later. What’s the use of an archive/backup with versioning if there’s no functional search feature? Unfortunately, you only realize this when you actually try to find something.

EDIT: At least I was able to find something in the console using find. Unfortunately, the mount was ejected in the meantime—it doesn’t seem very stable. But the goal remains: finding the versions in QuDedup.

Not sure if Qsirch will work… Maybe?

No, it doesn’t. Besides, the archive would have to be continuously mounted for indexing. None of this makes sense for a backup.
