Suggestion about new LAN DDNS feature

I just see myQNAPcloud introduced a new LAN DDNS feature and I’m quite excited. My LAN environment has some layer-3 routers so mDNS doesn’t work, and the LAN DDNS will allow me to stick to hostnames even in LAN environment.

However there are still some drawbacks:

  1. I can’t enable LAN DDNS but disable WAN DDNS. Once I disable WAN DDNS, the entire hybrid DDNS feature is off. I think a recent security standard is not to expose NAS on WAN, so it’s a natural thought to allow LAN connection only.
  2. Let’s Encrypt doesn’t work with my LAN-only setup. I think in theory Let’s Encrypt supports DNS-01 challange type which works without needing a WAN HTTP access, but my try to install Let’s Encrypt certificate just fails.

If the 2 things are fixed, the LAN DDNS feature will be much more useful.

Why not just put host names in your DNS server?

LAN IPv6 is same as the WAN IPv6 which is dependent on the prefix provided by ISP. So it’s dynamic.

UGH. IPV6. I keep forgetting about that and that it’s actually being used by some people!

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion — I’ll forward it to our internal team so they can evaluate it.
