Sync folder on one NAS to another over the internet

Hi all.

I use Windows 11 to access my Qnap TS-230. It has 2 x 18TB drives: 1 x Seagate ST18000NM003D-3DL103 and 1 x WDC WD180EDFZ-11AFWA0. The current Firmware is QTS 5.1.5.2679, drive config is RAID 1 and I am using a single port network.

I am not very technical and I am not sure if this is possible or what application to use but I would like to be able to drop files into a folder on my NAS and have them synced to another remote QNAP NAS over the internet. The files will be quite large, often 4K movies of the grandkids etc. The NAS at the other end is yet to be purchased but will probably be a Qnap TS 464. Is this possible? And what application would be needed? Ideally I would like to have the sync occur at a particular time.

Appreciate your advice.

Cheers, Allan

A simple HBS3 backup would be all that is needed to do this. Its built in to both NAS systems.

Thanks for that Matt. Shall check out HBS3. Cheers.

Although, yes, HBS3 can be used to perform the action, the real issue is how are you connecting and accessing the 2 networks.

The best way (IMO) is to setup a VPN connection between them. This is ideally done on your routers, and should be free. This would securely connect the networks and you would be able to access devices in either (depending on how you configure it) including the NAS boxes (but in reality, any device, printer, network share, etc).

Opening your network without a VPN is a great way to invite malware, hackers, etc into you device. This is a real threat that happens daily.

Being able to “find” the remote network is another question. You need either static IP addresses, or run a DDNS lookup.

So, while HBS3 is part of the solution (there are alternatives, but HBS3 is a good start), it is only one piece of the puzzle.
