Hi, I have looked at using Tailscale for remote VPN access to me NAS. I have installed Tailscale on the NAS, but when opening, I get “XML syntax error on line 8: attribute name without = in element” every time. I have uninstalled and re-installed Tailscale several times, with the same result. Does anyone know a solution for this or perhaps where I have gone wrong?

You gave me hope! But it was just dashed, as I just now tried Firefox instead of Brave, but with the same result.

We’ve been able to reproduce this on our end, and it looks like the error is tied to how the Web UI is being accessed rather than the browser or the Tailscale version. Specifically, it shows up when opening the Web UI via a myQNAPcloud SmartURL, but not when accessing it directly through the NAS’s local IP address.
As a workaround for now, could you try opening the Tailscale Web UI using your NAS’s local IP (e.g. http://<NAS-IP>:8080)? That should let you get in without the error. Meanwhile, we’re currently evaluating the SmartURL access path on our side.

I just had to reauthenticate Tailscale on my QNAP (a TVS-h1688x running QuTS here h6.0.2.3591). I just upgraded to Tailscale 1.58.2-1 off of the GitHub repository. When I open Tailscale a new window opens with a “Reauthenticate” button. When I open up the console and reload the page, I get these errors and the Reauthenticate button doesn’t do anything when I click on it.

In other words, how do I bridge the gap between what you have advised, and my issue where I hit the icon for Tailscale in the web interface to my NAS and it opens another tab with the error message. I can find no way to manipulate the Tailscale installation on my NAS.
Hi @Champs_01, sorry for the late reply — I only just saw your messages. I also should have explained the workaround more clearly before.
You don’t need to change anything in the Tailscale installation. What matters is which address you used to log in to QTS. If your browser’s address bar shows something like xxxx.myqnapcloud.com, you’re using the SmartURL, and clicking the Tailscale icon from there triggers the error.
To get around it:
- Find your NAS’s local IP. You can use Qfinder Pro, check Control Panel > Network & Virtual Switch, or look at your router’s device list. It usually looks like 192.168.x.x.
- On a computer on the same local network, open http://:8080 (e.g. http://192.168.1.50:8080) and log in to QTS there.
- Click the Tailscale icon as usual. It should open without the XML error.
