Starting on the 19th (it is the 21st). The system began rebooting every few minutes.
System had 8GB of RAM. four 2 GB sticks. Removed all but one, the reboots went to every 1 to 6 hours. Swapped RAM, same issue, swapped again, same issue.
I have to use the same RAM port because if I use any other port, they NAS doesn’t boot. No startup beeps. The front lights will come on with the RAM in the wrong ports (green system and LAN flashing).
With any 1 stick in the System light is red.
All HDD’s show good, raid shows good, when it is up it runs fine. Data can be accesses. Malware and AV scans show clean.
Event logs show nothing before the crash.
I have tried all 4 LAN ports. It is now at my home office so there is nothing accessing it and it still crashes. It was a the business.
Use another single disk (any size will fit) and start from scratch. Do not install any additonal apps.
If system persists rebooting, it is most likely a hardware issue. If system does not reboot, it seems to be something odd in operation system.
If a reboot occurs at latest after 6 hours, it will not take much time to see what happens.
I have had a similiar issue years ago at a TS-859 with QTS 4.2.???, system reboots nearly every 2 or 3 days after a firmware update. A second device with same configuration and firmware runs normally.
Only way to fix it was starting from scratch with an older firmware and updating again step by step to current firmware. Issue never re-occurs until today.
Not all DIMs are compatible with QNAP models. I had issues when I first bought my TS-873A and when I replaced the “cheap” memory with good memory, my problems went away. QNAP wants you to only use their memory. I don’t agree with that as their memory is excessively expensive, but if you want to have a baseline to diagnose a problem, always use just the memory that came with the NAS when you got it.
If that solves the issue, then it likely is a memory issue. There are other memory tests you can do if you have a NAS with an HDMI output. This is helpful. QNAP was saying for one issue that I had a memory issue. I ran the memory test and my memory checked out fine. So third party memory can and does with with your NAS. But test first with what QNAP shipped with it and only with that memory.
From experience, this kind of message is quite often RAM-related, especially if the reboot happens without any clear error logs. I’d suggest starting with a memory test first, as it’s one of the most common causes of unexpected restarts.
You can follow QNAP’s official guide here to test the RAM:
