Time Machine unable to back up

“Hi everyone,

I contacted Apple Support and the official response is that macOS 26 no longer supports backups to NAS devices.

Has anyone found a workaround or alternative solution?

Thanks in advance!”

How did you contact them? Forums or through support chat? I find the fact they no longer support this to be abominable. It’s ridiculous to have to manually connect a USB drive to the computer in order to back it up. If this is true then TimeMachine really loses its functionality. I’ve never used a connected drive to backup. Back in the day I had Time Capsules. When those started dying I got my NAS. With multiple machines, expecting users to backup to a USB drive is absolutely stupid.

Have you tried what is discussed in this post? Seems like people are getting it to work.

I contacted Apple through the official phone support.

They weren’t aware of the issue, but said they would look into it and get back to me.

A couple of days later, they called me back and told me that Time Machine backups via NAS are no longer supported.

Whether this is actually true or just a mistake from the support representative, I don’t know for sure.

Given that people are getting it to work, I’m thinking that Apple didn’t give you correct info. Have you tried the settings people have suggested?

The only people I’ve seen on the Apple forum who managed to get it working are using NAS devices from other brands.

I followed all the instructions they shared, but unfortunately, it still doesn’t work for me.

Has anyone here actually managed to make it work?

The brand of NAS should have nothing to do with it.

Regarding this, our understanding is that macOS Tahoe currently has a language issue. Are you currently using non-English characters in your path?

We have also verified the related functions internally, and they should be working normally. Additionally, we have not received any official news that macOS 26 no longer supports NAS.

If you are having trouble setting up Time Machine, please open a support ticket for us, and we can assist you. Thanks!
