Nice to meet you. I recently purchased a NAS and have started using it for personal data management.
I plan to share and use this NAS with my family in the future.
I have a question: Is there a way to prevent others from viewing the data I back up from my computer and other devices?
I apologize for asking such a basic question as a NAS beginner, but I would appreciate your guidance. ![]()
Method 1: Grant only general “everyone” permissions to the family account, while only your personal account has administrator privileges. Then, control access through the shared folder permissions so that only accounts with administrator privileges can view it.
Method 2: Add the encryption option when creating the shared folder, and each time you want to view the data, toggle the folder encryption on or off from Filestation.
Depending on the user’s skill level, usage scenario, and required controls, the following might be an alternative method besides JOHNNY-san’s approach.
Method 3. Hide Shared Folder (Control Panel - Shared Folders - Edit Shared Folder Properties - Turn ON Hide Network Drive)
*Note: If someone remembers and follows the access path, they can still view the folder, but if simply hiding the shared folder is sufficient, this method or adding a $ at the end of the shared folder name to make it hidden might also work.
