Can't communicate with old repeater hubs?

I replaced my NETGEAR NAS with a QNAP TS-462.
I set it up today, but the TS-462’s LAN connection did not become active.
After various troubleshooting steps, I narrowed down the cause to a very old repeater hub installed on my home LAN.
This repeater hub is a vintage device I got about 20 years ago when I bought my house. Has anyone else encountered this kind of issue?
The NETGEAR NAS is also connected to this repeater hub, but I can access it without any problems.

I’m not sure what kind of specs your old repeater hub has, but could it be that it only connects with a one-chunk cross cable or something like that? (Maybe it doesn’t support Auto MDIX?)

Since the TS-462 supports “2.5G/1G/100M/10M,” I’d guess that “it can’t connect with a 10M repeater hub” isn’t the issue. (Some 10G ports don’t support 10M connections, just in case.)

If the cable is the cause, swapping the LAN cable connected to the NETGEAR with the LAN cable you’re trying to use with the 462 should reverse which device can’t connect. Why not give it a try?

By the way, can you still buy cross cables nowadays…?

Thank you for your reply.

I managed to resolve the issue myself, and it seems the problem was with the repeater hub. After purchasing a new switching hub and replacing it, the connection worked smoothly.

The reason why it didn’t connect remains a mystery, but the setup is now complete and I’m currently transferring data from the old NAS. I wonder how many days it will take.

I’m glad to hear the issue has been resolved!
Data migration always takes time, doesn’t it…
With QNAP NAS devices, you can simply remove the HDD/SSD and insert them into the new unit, and you’ll be able to access your data on the new device, so I also make use of this method.
*You may need to reinstall some apps, but it’s super easy.

If you adjust the replacement cycles for HDD/SSD and the main unit, you won’t need a large amount of money all at once, so it’s quite convenient. Hope this helps!
