Don't know how to set up and install the newly purchased NAS

Today, I took advantage of the Double 11 sales and bought a TS-264, along with two 2TB hard drives.

The tutorial videos online are too advanced, and after watching them, I still have no idea how to get started.

I wonder if there are any official tutorial videos or detailed step-by-step guides specifically for beginners that could be referenced during the initialization process.

Here is a more straightforward article for now:

If we use this as a foundation, could you check where you are getting stuck?

Or, what is the goal you want to achieve? For example, do you want to be able to access files on the NAS directly from your computer? We can also start from your needs and goals and tell you how to proceed.

Hello, may I ask if you are in Taiwan?

If needed, you can also contact me, and we can arrange for a colleague to provide quick online Q&A tutorials. Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply!

I am in Taiwan, and I have already tried to complete the basic setup, but I am not sure if it is correct.

Could you arrange for a colleague to schedule an online Q&A session next week or directly assist with the setup?

The intended NAS functions are as follows:

  1. Back up a specified folder once a day (overwrite if there are updates)
  2. Allow the specified folder to be accessed and synchronized over the public network
  3. Enable access to this folder even when not in the office

Or if you have any other recommended features~

If we look at these three features separately:

Daily backup of a specified folder → Will it be backing up from one computer or multiple computers to the NAS? (Both are possible for us.) Besides overwriting when there are updates, if files are removed from the PC, should the files also be deleted remotely, or should they be kept?

Public network access for simultaneous use → Is it read-only, or is writing also allowed? Is this referring to sharing via network neighborhood SMB? Sharing with macOS and PC?

Access outside the company → For mobile phones, access is possible via an app, and for PCs, we provide VPN or a web interface for connection.

You can first consider the details of these requirements, and then we can provide corresponding configuration suggestions.

Actually, I want to copy all the data from my own computer to the NAS (probably just some specified folders), so that employees can access my latest progress at any time.

If there are updates, overwrite them. If files are deleted on the PC, it’s okay to sync the deletions as well. However, if it’s possible to keep deleted files for a period of time, that might be a good option (to avoid accidental deletions). Is that doable?

Can be used on the public network → Is it read-only, or can it be written as well? Does this refer to sharing via SMB (Network Neighborhood) on the network? Sharing with macOS and PC?

:speech_balloon:
Yes! The concept is like Network Neighborhood, so that colleagues connected to the same network cable can all see the folders I want to share with them, and can also help supplement the completeness of this folder.

So, theoretically, this NAS is shared at a certain level, but I’m worried that colleagues might accidentally delete or wrongly edit my files. Is there any solution for this in the system?

Sharing with Windows PC

Can be used outside the company → Mobile phones can connect via App, and for PCs, we provide VPN or web interface access.

:speech_balloon:
That’s great, so I can access it anytime.

Above all, you’ve summarized my needs very thoroughly!
Thank you very much.

We have a recycle bin mechanism. Files deleted through our services such as SMB/FileStation can potentially be recovered.

So this NAS is theoretically shared, but I’m worried that colleagues might accidentally delete or wrongly edit my files. Is there any solution for this in the system?

Shared with Windows PC

You can set account permissions so that these colleagues can only read, not edit or delete (unless they copy to their local machine).
