TR-004 and ReFS: slow performance on Windows 11

Hi everyone, I recently bought a TR-004 to use as backup repository for Veeam Agent on my Windows PC using hardware RAID-5.
I formatted the drive with ReFS (64KB block size) to exploit fast cloning but noticed slow transfer speeds, so I formatted it with NTFS and it was much faster. At first I thought it was the application (Veeam) but running a CrystalDisk confirmed my impressions (NTFS on top, ReFS below):

I then thought it was the file system, so I took a random 3.5" HDD and tested it with NTFS and ReFS, connected to SATA and USB 3.0: no differences at all.

I’m a bit puzzled know; do you have any thought to share? Could it be the TR-004 or the combination between ReFS and hardware RAID-5?
I’m currently using firmware 1.20 with 4x Seagate ST2000DL003 2TB drives.

Green drives are always a bad idea for a RAID. But I would open a ticket with QNAP and show them your results. Maybe it can be addressed with a firmware update.

@marcodalli let us know how you go with your issue or is it resolved already?

Hi, I opened a case with support, but I was told for this type of products they don’t support performance issues.
So I am where I was at the beginning; the array is not being used currently, waste of money unfortunately… :frowning: trying to figure out what other use case I could use it for.

@marcodalli ,

Ah Yes, that does make sense, because the TR-XXX unit is just an expansion unit, where it doesn’t even support RAID 1 with just two drives while running the other drives independently.

Therefore, you can do RAID 10 or Individual Disks expansion array for the Backup Copy or the SOBR feature.
