tr-004 transfer speed issues

This is a follow-up to a thread started on the qnap forum. I got a reply from dolbyman but I can’t post an answer on the forum : So here are some of the speeds I got :
so with a 2.31 go mp4 file
copy from nas to tr-004 : 143 mb/s ( not bad !!?)
copy from tr-004 to nas : 90mb/s

copying a 383 mo file from windows to the tr-004 ( with tr-004 attached to the nas ) : 30 mb/s
from nas to windows : ( same file ) about 35 mb/s

Thank you for any advice.

Can’t find the topic in forum.qnap.com, do you have a link ? (so I do not ask questions that were potentially answered there)

Thank you for your answer.
The topic is here :
https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?p=871079#p871079

It was “split” from an old thread on which I necroposted.

Ok, strange that smaller (not tiny) files transfer slower than larger

What disk models are in the DAS? (But even if it was SMR models, the write would suffer, not the read)

ok so slowness is on the windows platform when copying files too and from the DAS.

Are you definitely using a USB 3 port on the windows machine? are you using a USB3 cable?

Normally a good idea, but OP said that larger files copy with down with 143MB\s

Unless I read that wrong

you didnt, but neither did the op say what cable(s) or cables he was using. I have no way of knowing if he used the same cable or not or if it is damaged. We also dont know what USB port on the windows machine was used. bottleneck is somewhere.

does the OP have AV running and copy/write is scanned in realtime from the windows machine? the nas and das wont have AV realtime scanning.

Hello, thank you all for your replies.
So I will explain my current setup :
tr-004 is attached to my qnap TS 453s pro via a usb-C to usb-A 3.2 gen1 as required by the documentation ( not the original cable of the tr-004 though - this one is 1meter long - I bought tr-004 secondhand without the cable;

tr-004 is set as raid 10 ( software mode ) with four 3.5 inch ironwolf 4tb disks inside.
the NAS is raid 5 with 4 WD red 2.5 inch 1TB drives. - plugged to the router via rj45
The tr-004 is set as external drive ( didn’t manage to set it as the NAS extension )
On windows 11, my nas can be seen on the network as a network computer ( I logged in as admin once ) and I have access to all folders. the NAS folders are captioned on WINDOWS as “default drive shares”, and the tr-004 also appears, this time as “esata storage share”.

So if i’m not mistaken data from windows to the tr-004 uses the network ( I have a recent rj45 cat6 cable plugged in to my router as well as an active wifi connection, with both handled by "killer intelligence center ) to access the nas then the above mentioned cable from the nas to the tr-004. Maybe this explains the low 30mb/s speeds.

One more test with the 383 mo file ( mp4 format)
Note : all the tasks below executed from within windows explorer

tr-004 to nas : 90 - 100 mb/s
Nas to tr-004 : 180 mb/s !
( these tasks seem faster to execute from windows than from filestation…)

Windows to tr-004 : around 60mb/s
Windows to qnap : briefly reached 70 mb/s ( average around 60 mb/s I’d say)

Tr-004 to windows : around 30-35 mb/s
NAS to windows : slightly slower 28 mb/s

the speeds mentioned are those given by windows explorer during the transfer, I don’t have a specialized tool to measure speed.
The speed are not constant and I give you my “average” of the speed

What is the speed when connected directly to a Windows Computer ? (if still slow, it’s not the NAS)

Is it ok to eject the tr-004 from the nas ( via the eject function in qts ) and then plug it to my laptop , or should I shutdown the tr-004 before plugging it to my laptop ?

I am in 4 other TR-004 discussions right now … so I might have mixed up this one

Is your TR-004 in internal storage pool mode or external storage mode ? (in the external mode, you can move the TR to any machine that can read the file system involved (e.g. NTFS)

external storage mode - so I have my answer thank you. I will try and let you know if speeds change. Thanks again for your help.

just as an aside : i didn’t manage to set the tr-004 as my nas extension and I guess that is because my nas is set as a static volume - I can’t create a storage pool on it)

with tr-004 ( ill call it DAS) attached to laptop via usb cable ( same cable )
DASto windows : 250mb/s ( all good I guess)
windows to DAS: 200 mb/s

So maybe i’ll keep the DAS attached to the NAS, but if I have large amounts of data to transfer to or from windows, i’ill plug the DAS to windows occasionally.

edit : the transferred file was the same 383 mo mp4 file. I just changed the windows and the DAS directories for the transfers to avoid repeating the exact same operations.
