I have an existing PC running Windows 10 (Pro) with 3 WD 6 TB drives in Storage Spaces pool. Can I move those devices to a TR-004 connected to a different Windows PC and be able to use them without any problems (yes, Storage Spaces will need some ‘care and feeding’ but that is already understood)? My understanding that as long as the TR-004 is configured to run in Individual mode, the PC should see each drive separately and therefore allow Storage Spaces to create a pool using those devices.
Kind of a waste to use the TR units as a simple port replicator, get a different JBOD enclosure for that. But yes, you can set the TR-004 to individual mode and it will act as a port multiplier.
OK, thanks for the feedback.
The new home for the pool and what the TR-004 would be connected to is an Intel NUC. I’m unsure if there is something that would provide equivalent function.
If I use amazon.ca for instance, a Sabrent 4 Bay Hard drive dock is 100 bucks cheaper than a QNAP TR-004. Both are USB Type-C.
The QNAP TR-004 has the advantage of a built in RAID capable SATA controller, that will create a simple block storage device for you from up to 4 drives. (so you do not need to worry about moving the device between computers and keeping the storage intact), But if you WANT to build your own storage from single disks, you can use something like the Sabrent for less money
That Sabrent $100 box appears to be just-the-ticket, thanks! That it’s called a dock is a bit misleading (to me) since I am familiar with docking stations for laptops and it’s not being called a DAS is also less than helpful. A rose by another other name …
