TS-201 network drive connection under WIN 10

Hi everyone,

First, my user status: DAU (dumbest assumable user) with basic knowledge

I’ve been trying for a while now—unsuccessfully—to use my (TS201 → corrected) as network storage in my home network (4 PCs) under WIN10.

Technical data:

TS201 / 2.3.0 Build 0825T / 2 drives (500GB each) / RAID 1

Status:

  • Hardware
    • Laptop ZBook 15 (PC1, 64-bit OS, WIN10 Pro Version 22H2)
    • TS201 connected to router via LAN
    • TS201 reset using the reset button
    • After powering on, everything OK → LEDs light up as expected – long beep sounds
  • Software:
    • Qfinder Pro 7.13.2 → installed on ZBook (connected to router via WiFi), works → TS201 is found
    • Login to TS201 successful
    • PING works

Goal:

To set up a folder structure on the TS201 that all PCs on the home network can access

Problem:

  • I can’t manage to integrate the TS201 into Windows Explorer so that it shows up like, say, a USB stick

  • Updating to 4.2.6 fails → "Warning – System update error

Error updating the system! Check the website where you downloaded the image file for more information, or contact technical support."

  • The manual I found is for WIN 95 (+/-)

  • When I try to mount the network drive via Qfinder, I get the error message: “The connection to the network drives on ‘NAS’ could not be established”

Can someone save me from my eternally unsuccessful installation attempts?

Greetings from Reutlingen

Manfred

Solution path:

  • Connect TS201 to LAN → in my case, to the router
 Don’t forget to plug it in ;-D
  • Since I bought mine used, I pressed the reset button “on the back of the device” to reset the TS201
  • QNAP | Secure, Intelligent Data & Storage Solutions
    → Support
    → Download Center
    → Choose model
  • Download and installation of “QNAPQfinderProWindows-7.13.2.1308” (for WIN)
  • Download and installation of “NetBak Replicator” (for WIN)
→ Power on TS201 – after a successful self-test (LEDs as expected and long beep)
    → Open Qfinder
In my case the TS201 was recognized and displayed immediately
→ Log in ->!!! after reset
    ->User: administrator
->Password: admin (I’m not totally sure if it’s admin or Admin)
  • Set up TS201 – I made a mistake here with users and folders, which I later corrected
  • Integration into Windows folder structure
→ In the “Windows Features” window (type below in search box)
→ SMB Direct – if enabled → disable it
→ Enable support for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing
→ Enable SMB 1.0/CIFS Client and SMB 1.0/CIFS Server (Not sure if you need both – just experiment ;-))
!!!Big thanks to manni_das_mammut, dolbyman, and Becker2020 who pointed me in the right direction
    → Opened NetBak Replicator
→ Made the folder accessible on the desktop via shortcut
…It still doesn’t work quite as perfectly as I’d like, but it’s a start and I can use it, the rest is just nitpicking

You can also find a good guide at www.qnap.com, Support, User Manuals → QTS is a very comprehensive read

Hi and welcome to the forums

Firstly, is the NAS model a TS-201 or a TS-210? You mention both models in your post.

Momentan komplett unklar ist;

Also, please be aware that this is the English part of the forum. AI translated your post, but there is a separate German area. Please try to post in English here.

Stupid AI forum translator, I’ve moved it

DAU is right, posted in the wrong language section at first, classic.

Due to the firmware, it is a TS-201 (the 0825T wasn’t available for the TS-210).

That’s also why the update to QTS 4 fails. There’s no newer QTS available for that device.

Thanks for the welcome  .

Sorry, it’s the TS201

Well, the TS-201 can go in the circular file now—that thing is 20 years old.

My mistake → it’s the TS201

  • How do I set up the shares?
  • Crappy? SMB1/SMB2?

My first NAS was a TS-419P+, I had never used such an old NAS before.

It will only run SMB1, so it really shouldn’t be used anymore. (It’s also no longer supported by Windows 11)

Hmm…okay. I actually thought I had selected the German forum…

I think I’ll move the post to the German forum… It’s already hard enough as it is to describe the situation properly

I had already moved it to the German subsection

It’s my first attempt at setting up a home network with storage… so yeah

And… It’s also a question of cost . If you can afford it, great, if not… hmm… you’ll end up with something old here :open_mouth:

Help me out… What does SMB1/SMB2 mean?

Oh..wow..super  Thanks

Basically, it’s a protocol used to exchange shared data on private networks.

There are used NAS devices out there, and they don’t necessarily have to be 20 years old—a middle ground would be better.

Lol… I know it more like this: Manni the grumpy mammoth ;-D .

When the question came up about whether it was 210 or 201, it was clear to me why the update failed…

Thanks again for the info

Hit the wrong button again…

Any suggestions for a NAS?

If the age of the TS201 does not result in any significant disadvantages compared to newer versions
→ Challenge to all the experts:
How can I integrate the TS201 as desired?

The final firmware released for the TS-201 was 2.5.0, so it’s at-least upgradable to that.

Finding a downloadable copy could be tricky though.
