TS-219P II problem with external IronWolf 4TB in USB HDD case

Hi,

For backup I have an external 3.5" drive in USB HDD case (ICY BOX IB-372StU3-B).
Old drive (WD Caviar Green 2TB) has run short on space so I purchased a new drive (Seagate IronWolf 4TB ST4000VN006) for the USB HDD case.

With new drive in USB HDD case I get an error when connecting it to NAS:
— cut —
Type Date Time Users Source IP Computer name Details
Warning 2025/01/06 21:01:24 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [/dev/sdq] I/O error, sense_key=0x0, asc=0x0, ascq=0x0, CDB=28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00.
— cut —

The new drive works fine if I put it in NAS bay 2.
The new drive in USB HDD case works fine if I connect it to my Windows 10 PC.

Any hints as to why all parts seem to work independently and together, but just not in the combination with the new drive in USB HDD connected to NAS?

NAS: TS-219P II, firmware 4.3.3.2784 build 20240619
Old Drive: WD Caviar Green 2TB WD20EARS-14MVW80.
New Drive: Seagate IronWolf 4TB ST4000VN006.
USB HDD case: ICY BOX IB-372StU3-B.

try removing any of the partitions of the 4TB disk when attached to your windows PC so it is classed as a fresh drive. then plug it back into the NAS (via USB) and see if it works or at least is recognised but the NAS.

I have seen in the past some NAS’s complaining of certain models of USB drives though not lately.

Hi,

I put it in the USB case straight out of the box, and it did the exact same when connecting it to the NAS then. Seems like it’s not at all recognized.
That’s when I tried to connect it to my Windows PC and succesfully did a format of it the first time. I then put it in NAS slot 2 and that’s where it sits currently. I did a format (to EXT4) and a backup that way, but I don’t like to use the NAS slot for backup because I am not sure if I could mess anything up doing it that way.

I will put it back in the USB case and delete all partitions on it and try again.

Hello again,

so I took the drive out from Bay 2, put it in USB HDD case and browsed my files with Windows PC using DiskInternal Linux Reader. All good.
Then deleted all partitions on the disk using Windows Computer Management, plugged the USB HDD case back into the NAS and same result. After a few minutes, this error in log:

Type Dato Tid Brugere Kilde IP Computer navn Indhold

I guess the disk is not compatible via USB. worth raising a ticket with QNAP, but that’s my guess.

I remember years ago I have a WD Elements USB that was not compatible with my qnap at the time. though other models of WD Elements were. a few firmware updates latest and then it was supported.

I submittet a ticket.
I don’t expect much from it though, as this is roughly 12 years old hardware.
Thank you in any case.

Did you try to format the drive ? If you removed all partitions, the NAS would also have to format it first to actually use it.

Hi Dolby,

Before deleting all partitions this time I tried formatting the drive by putting it in NAS bay 2.
Then I did a trial backup to it, pulled it out of the NAS and put it in USB case and saw that my files could be read by Win10 PC while NAS still wouldn’t recognise the drive when it’s in the USB case.

The behaviour and error code is the same when the drive is in USB case, no matter if it is formatted or not.

Never do backup in internal NAS bays

Format the drive in the USB dock via Windows PC and the plug the drive in the dock via USB into the TS-219+ and try again. Stick to NTFS as these ancient NAS do not support exFAT

Bought a new USB HDD case; cheap Maiwo K3568A, seems to work fine with NAS now.
