Hi all, I have a TS-230 running QTS 5.2.9.3499 with two Seagate Ironwolf 4TB disks (ST4000VN008-2DR166) in a RAID 1 setup. Happily running but S.M.A.R.T now gives me a message that one of the disks is experiencing bad blocks and advises to switch the disk. Bought a new (exactly the same type) sealed disk and initially (unexperienced) shutdown the NAS and replaced the disks. After startup NAS Qulog reports [Storage and Snapshots] “Failed to create disk partitions”. Unplugged the new disk. Replugged the old disk, NAS rebuilds the RAID 1 without issues. Learned (in this group) that hot swapping is a better option, so tried to do that, but end up with the same error. Checked the disk with a USB to SATA connector. The disk is completely uninitialized when checked with Disk Management in Windows 11. I followed the user guide process when hot swapping the disk, how can I overcome this situation and have my new disk rebuild and become a member of the RAID 1 storage pool? Do I need to do something to the new disk? Is it common that a NAS is not able to create the disk partitions on a completely uninitialized disk?
Can you try a full set of tests of the disks on your other machine? It could be busted afterall
Please power off the device, insert the new drive along with the drives that are not faulty, and try again. If the rebuild still fails, please take a screenshot of the error message and share it with us, or open a support ticket so our Support Team can assist you.
It seems that there is a disk hardware failure that is the root cause of this problem. diskpart is not able to create a partition either if I connect the drive to a SATA connector, even though I can see the full uninitialized disk connected and correctly listed and selected. Might have to get the disk swapped for a working one.
Thanks SteveKo for chipping in. Appreciate your efforts in helping out. As stated in response to dolbyman’s friendly advice, I think the drive is dead and not writable. Now in contact with the seller to reach a swap agreement.
